We are working on replacing the cutlass bearing on our 1990 Hunter Legend 37. We would like to remove the shaft to complete the replacement, but we don't have room to drop the rudder. Is anyone aware if the four screws for the strut are into fixed plate or if there are backing nuts under the fuel tank in the aft cabin? I have attached a photo of the strut and the screws I am referring to in the question. Thanks!

They are nuts under fuel tank tough way to go about avoiding rudder drop because you have to rebed strut into hull also need relevel and align strut. So option #2 dig a hole for rudder. Option #3 lift motor 4" up or enough to slide shaft straight out into cabin or just use a split strut tool

Thanks Whatfiero1! It looks like there are difficulties with all of them. The rudder drop gets a little complicated by the boat having a bulb wing keel. The rudder is only a few inches from the ground in the cradle, and we have a hydraulic autohelm that will need to be removed from the shaft. I had not looked at bringing the shaft back into the boat under the engine though.
