Am repowering my (new for me) O'Day 28, replacing the original Universal MD 5411 with a Yanmar 14 hp 2YM15. My boat is missing the original prop which I'm told was a 2 bladed one. Short of hauling and measuring clearance, can anyone tell me what size prop was original equipment, or what diameter can the shaft clearance accept? Thanks, RickN

O'Day 28 prop size

Went thru this exercise about 8 months ago. Tried for months to determine the correct size and submitted a lot of info and measurements to Michigan Wheel Corp, who ran the numbers I gave them and told me I needed a 12R13 (wrong!). I finally was able to contact Rudy at D & R narine(after about 2 dozen calls to him) and he knew right away that the stock size for the 1981 O'Day 28 was 12R8. I purchased a 12R8 bronze 2-blade sailer prop with a 3/4" bore, which they bored to a 1" standard taper shaft size, and shipped to me for $369 including freight, from H & H Propeller (www.hhprop.com, 800-325-0117). It has very little prop walk and seems to function quite well, I'm very happy with it.

prop size 28 oday

HI, Rick, In my 28 oday 85 the orignal owner repowered from the universal 11 HP. to a yanmar 3gm30f which is a 27 HP and during a sea test I found I was overloading the engine it was over prop. I took it to H&H Propeller inc which they put all the information about he boat and the transmission ratio in the conputer and opened up the pitch angle all for $104. and what a difference it made excellent.as DAVE said he went to H&H Propeller they are great co, they are in MA. & ME good luck Frederick Pierce
