Prop shaft seal flush winterizing

I am leaving my 323 in the water this winter. Mine has a flushed shaft seal that has a small through hull with a short length of hose connected to a nippple just aft of the lip seal. Since the hose is exposed to the cold air in the cabin it could freeze. My thought was closing the thruhull, removing the hose from that end, flushing with anitfreeze and then plugging the hose off.

I have a Beneteau 281, and was wondering the same question.. I have seen references saying that there is too little water in the seal to cause any problems, but i'd like to see the real answer..

I would tend to agree, and the seal is flexible and below the water line. I am concerned about the nipple sticking up above the seal housing though. One thought I had was keeping some insulation over it. My boat sits with bubblers and the water temp should help protect it.

We've left our 361 in the water year round for the last 4 years and will do so again this year. The water where we're at (Baltimore, MD) will freeze but nothing too bad plus the slips are bubbled when that happens. I always shut the thru hull to prevent sinking should the hose to the nipple freeze and split. I also wrap the hose with pipe insulation to reduce the chance of that happening. Additionally we leave a ceramic heater, set to low, on in the cabin and so far have not had any problems.

I also rely on the bubbler system and since this thru-hull is below the water line, it shouldn't freeze. I'll be interested in what others have to say. Our marina doesn't allow heaters to remain on when no one is on the boat so that's out for me. Bill
