Maybe I'm easily impressed or expect too little, but my prop shaft is still within specs.
After suffering a broken strut and operating the boat like that at high power settings, I expected the shaft to have a bow in it. I had noticed a knocking sound during turns. Once I got into a marina, I hired a diver to discover the strut was broken off. The noise was caused by the shaft hitting the stern tube. I finally got the boat on the hard and hung a new strut so I could check.
I found the runout on the shaft at the prop taper to be .0030 inch. Tolerance according to a table that was provided to me by DayDreamer41 is .0080 or .003 depending on which standard you use. http://www.pacificmarine.net/engine...er-shaft/propeller-shaft-tolerance-tables.htm
I measured this by placing a dial indicator on a steel stand and hand rotating the shaft in increments while watching for deflection.
I had been skeptical when a dockmate indicated he had the same issue on the same make/model of boat. He said he ran his back from the San Juan Islands that way with no shaft damage.
Now I have 2 coats of Micron 66 bottom paint on and I just need to redo the boot stripe and polish the sides. Splash on Sunday will be proof of concept.
Yes, I did clean off all the old prop paint and change the zincs.
