I am changing to a lower pitched prop for my Johnson 9.9. I need some recommendations for the proper waterproof grease to put on the shaft before I install the new shaft. I have looked in all of my catalogs and can't seem to find any specifically waterproof greases. Many thanks.

OB Shaft Grease

I used to have an 8 hp Evinrude, which is about the same motor as your Johnson 9.9. I greased the shaft with white lithium grease annually and it seemed to work well. I would also guess that marine wheel bearing grease would work as well, or better. I don't think the type of grease you use is nearly as important as making sure you grease the shaft regularly.

I just use real light coat of marine wheel

bearing grease that I use for trailer wheel bearings, Lithium should work fine also. Whatever water resistant grease you have available. It's just to keep shaft & prop metals from "galling" or corroding together so you can't get prop off. Should probably pull prop once a year or so to untangle fishing line from shaft so it doesn't cut the seal to lower unit anyway.
