We took Breezin II ('88 Mark II - tall rig) out on Lake Lanier, GA saturday during one of the best sailing days of the summer. The steady 20+ mph winds kept up on a great starboard tack running down the length of the lake which is rare! Talk about, the rail in the water?! Full main and 150 with no reefs.
Anyways, with the transmission gear always in neutral, and at full speed several of the crew including me were hearing this faint, metallic, "tick-tick-tick" noise from under the cockpit. Water-pump? bildge pump? fluttering leech line? What the heck
? It was not until I jumped below to open the aft engine access door that I saw the shaft rotating at a mighty clip.
Never, in my years of sailing have I ever heard the sound of a rotating prop under sail. The funny thing was, as the winds started to die down and we slowed abit, the noise stopped. In port I dove down under the boat to check for play in the prop, cutlass and skeg, but found nothing. All was sound.
I can only conclude that I might have something else going on within the drivetrain. The sound was metallic, which cannot be good considering the long prop shaft run. My guess is still a worn cutlass, packing gland area or maybe something in the tranny (gear noise).
Has anyone else had this experience or can to offer any opinions? To get that two blade prop rotating had to take alot of momentum, but its the metallic sound that worries me. It does not occur under power.
