Do I need a puller to get the prop off, or can I tap it off with a hammer? I noticed it's a tapered shaft. Thanks. Don

Puller

To be certain not to damage it, get an inexpensive puller, or borrow one. It will make your life a lot easier. Rick D.

Second

Rick's recommendation. A hammer on the prop can damage not only the prop but the shaft and the transmission if the coupler is still connected.

Rent a puller

You should be able to rent one from any rental shop. Get a 2-prong one if 2-blade prop. No more than 8 or $10. David is right, hammer blows on the prop will damage it, and you can really do severe damage to the tranny if coupler is still connected.

If you tap...

...it off, you will risk bending the shaft. Rent/use a puller...cautiously.

Go to the Hunter Big Boat Forum

There is a short explanation on the Big Boat forum. As pointed out by the others, there are several things that can go wrong if you don't use a puller.

Actually....

as strange as this may sound...just use some dish soap...stick it in the bearing and pump...loosen the bolts on the coupling (to the engine), but keep the prop on the shaft (for a bit of leverage)...with a little twisting, the shaft should come out with very little effort.
