Fellow sailors, While looking through the specifications for my 1979 Hunter 30, I see the prop spec is 13x13. (With the exception being my year, 1979 which called out for a 13x10 prop) Anyone know why 1979 was the only year using the 13x10 prop? Power on my 30 is the YSM12. Is there a engine cruise speed advantage using the 13x13 with my engine? Happy sailing in 07 Bob Alden

No advantage of NOT using the proper prop.

Bob: There is no advantage of using a prop that is NOT sized for your engine. These early engines are already under powered so using a prop that is not sized properly will only lead to additional wear on the engine, more fuel consumption and even less motoring performance. This applies to every engine, but when an engine is already short on performance it is even more critical. Contact a Prop Shop and get their recommendations for your setup.

gear ratio

I would guess that the engine may have a different gear ratio. If they changed ratios for that year then the prop size will also change if the engine is the same. check on the plate on the gear, then call a prop shop with all the data, engine hp. prop size, gear ratio, max rpm of engine. and they can spec it out for ya. the right size is the only way to go on props!
