As a newbie here at Hunter I need some advice. I am replacing the prop on my 42 Passage. I currently have 2 blade fixed and will be going to 3 blade. But here is the decision. 3 Blade fixed by Axiom (British prop) or 3 blade feathering Autostream? Of course the discussion is whether to put up with drag and have no worries about the working parts not deploying OR sail better (especially in low breeze) and risk the working parts as designed. I imagine the frequency of feathering Autostream failing is quite small or they couldn't stay in business but it is critical when docking or when needed in severly foul weather. So, please let me know your advice and/or experiences. Thanks!

I can't speak to a comparison but what is it about the Axiom that puts it at the top of your fixed-prop selection? Have you considered a Campbell Sailor?

I read an article in Yachting World, 2009, that comapred a lot of props and the Axiiom was very high in performeance, particularly eliminatino of prop walk and stopping with control for docking. I have read good things about Campbell Sailor. It does seem more prevalent than Axiom.

I've had an AutoStream installed since 2000 with no mechanical issues. I did replace the o-rings once just because they had a few checks on them - it probably wasn't really necessary. The feathering feature puts the leading edge of the prop as the true leading edge in either forward or reverse. Consequently the stopping power in reverse is impressive. The entire prop is made of stainless so that there is no dissimilar metal issue between the prop and the shaft.

I did install a line cutter to help protect the prop when I snag a lobster pot. But in the past 12 seasons I have probably shredded 4-5 lobster pots that were caught with no damage to the AutoStream.

Other Props

Well maybe if you ask about more props here you will get much more advise for sure and maybe you should look and research other props and what sailors here have to say.
I love my Flex O Fold folding prop and it has no parts needing replacing and the only maintance is clean it depending on build up and my boat in in Florida in water 12 months, but also look and see what others are using.

Autostream

One advantage for an Autostream is that the distributor is Martec in Long Beach, CA so you have a source for service close. I have a Slipstream geared folder and have been well satisfied with it. I know lots of people with Autostreams and I have not met anyone who wasn't satisfied.

Sorry I didn't express it properly but I have done research on a lot of props and I was impressed by Flex O Fold as well as Max Prop and to a certain degree the Kiwi. But I narrowed the search as one must do to Axiom fixed or Autostream. I appreciate your input re your prop.

I've been talking with Gary at Martec and he is most helpful and very knowledgeable. I have heard good things about both Martec and Autostream so I think that is the way to go. Thanks for your advice.

Autostream works for us

We put an Autostream on our H41 when commissioning her new in 2005. Been pleased with the prop all this time. No issues. A little bit of maintenance needed but no different than Maxprop (new prop zinc and some grease about once/yr, ymmv). Gary at Martec is great to work with, very knowledgeable, and if you go to any big boatshow like in Annapolis, you may well see him there. I usually pick up a new zinc from him each year at the show, since it is cheaper than having one shipped -- weighs 1lb.

I think I blame Rich (see his response) years ago for this prop purchase. Thanks Rich!

I have the Autostream on my Elite 37 for the past 10 years with no maintenance or operational issues. Great service from Martec. Lube once a year, in or out of the water. Great for backing with little or no prop walk.
