I'm a fairly experienced coastal sailor. My wife and I have sailed our Hunter 33 along the New England coast for years now. Aside from my brother-in-law's Sunfish, I've never set foot in any sailboat less than 28'. Here's the rub: Yesterday I came across a badly neglected and somewhat beat up Tanzer 16 "overnighter" (yeah, right). It's a cute little cuddy cabin job built in Canada in 1972. I'm handy enough, so I made a ridiculous offer with (literally) the money in my wife's purse. Now it's in my side yard looking like a puppy that wants to be fed. And so I ask: 1) Anyone who has one or something like it- Is it as easy to turtle as the dream I had last night? 2) How does one clean a small sail that Neptune has used for toilet paper? 3) Even my 13 year old knew the cockpit floor would be wet to the core (look dad, it's spongy) Sawzall? Jackhammer? Just fill it with sand? 4) Does anyone know how to do graffiti? Not remove it, do it. I think someone tried to tar over the gel coat. Advice and/or nautical prayers would be appreciated.

Sounds like you got a deal - the little Tanzers are supposed to be great boats. I always wanted to do up a boat like the partridge family bus, or a rat fink graphic like some of the hot rods. Something so weird everyone would assume I am insane. A steam cleaner might remove the tar, or a hot air gun and a scraper. You might be able to find a graffiti artist through your local police department, or an airbrush artist through an art school. If you do anything crazy with it make sure you post some pics.

The 22 is a great little boat although I have never liked the high cabin-no side decks look. They sail well and offer the most room I know of in a 22 ft boat. Wouldnt worry about turtling- the keel is 1250 lbs. Fix it up, learn as you go, use the Internet, sail it with your son.

Some folks in our marina painted their sails
with a tye dye look. Seems to be working out ok! I would suggest mineral spirits for the tar removal. The fellow on the mooring next to me has a Tanzer 22, but for the last two years he has not even gotten the sails on it.

Tanzer 16
My first boat was a Tanzer 16 of about the same vintage. A great boat to learn on. I'm now a Hunter 240 owner. I turtled mine on one chilly day in May. I was in the water over an hour. I was on a small motor lake (under 10 hp) and it took a lot of work and help to get in right side up. The transom on mine was in REAL bad shape. The drain hole is about 2 inches uphill from the low point in the stern (to get it away from the rudder) and the rainwater just collects there and is horrible on the transom wood. What do you expect after 30 years though. I bought mine for $1,000 and sold her when I upgraded for $750....can't beat $250 for two and a half years of sailing lessons! Good little boat. Ken

Turtle
I have a 50 year old Rhodes 18 that I restored last year. We used some blocks and line to lift it off the trailer and lowered it onto the garage floor onto some packing blankets. We then used the same blocks and line(attached to the chain plates) to lift the one side and flip it over to refinish the hull. It took about an hour and 3 people. I have seen the jack up the tongue method and this was so much better. It is a pleasure to strip the bottom from the top and not lying underneath it. We rolled it back to do the deck and topsides. That is more than the 780 lbs or so on the J22 that I sail, so I'd guess the boat is pretty stable. 1250 is higher than many 22' boats, Catalina and Capri 22 come to mind there - it sounds adequate for a small keel/daysailor/very coastal cuiiser. I'd go for it on the repairs if you have the time. Get some books on fiberglass repair and learn how to use penetrating epoxy to fix rot. Best o' Luck, OC
