Several months ago the was an insurance threat in which various insurance companies were discussed. One of which was Progressive. The consensus was the while Progressive had good prices their track record with boats was sketchy at best. Well I had my first claim and am very impressed with the speed and professionalism of the company. TS Debbie passed through and the high tide and wind hung my 2nd boat up on a piling. This happened on a Thursday night just before I was to leave on a trip up north the next morning. I called Progressive they immediately authorized a call to Boatus my tow company. Within an hour and a half the boat was off the piling. The next day after I had left to go up north the adjuster arrived and looked everything over. He called me and we set up an appointment to meet when I returned.

Upon my return he was there and cut me a check on the spot for the minor damage. I previously had BoatUS but they are just out of sight with their premium on a second boat. I am very impressed.

Edit: I have no affiliation and I'm sure that there are horror stories out there. This is just my experience. The old school insurance companies have stopped writing policies or are so expensive they are unreasonable.

Great to hear since I have Progressive as well, do you have the policy directly with Progressive or through USAA

Bought it online directly. I should have added that there was no deductible due to a vanishing deductible policy.

I have dealt with Progressive on an internal level as a software vendor for almost 20 years. They are and have always been an aggressively managed company, meaning on a management level they are very hands on, professional, and demanding - and their success is a testament to a well managed company. Progressive was very high on my boat quote (probably because they didn't want 'that kind' of business) but I would have no qualms about having them as my insurance company. I went through a BoatUS company and have very reasonable rates, but I've never made a claim either.

No survey just an inspection. Claim settled for 800.00 on a bent pulpit plus 1400 for BoatUS for getting it off the piling.

I recently had a claim on my motorboat, which is insured through Progressive. The motor caught on fire due to a faulty carb. The repairs came to about $1.300.00, of which Progressive paid all but my $500 deductible and the repair to the actual faulty carb. I got about $650 total from them. They were reasonably quick in getting out to the repair place to inspect, and the check came very soon after that.

I have them through USAA on my boat and a claim was processed quickly. Since the claim was for a part that I planned on installing myself, the adjustor threw in "materials" as a bit of compensation for my labor.
The only issue was the fact that the adjustor had no experience with sailboats and did not have any of his own information to price the required item. He gladly took the quote from SBO, however, and cut me a check on the spot.

I should also add that I had little or no deductable due to X years without a claim.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I had progressive but switched due to the coverage that Boat US gives for fuel spills etc. I felt more comfortable dealing with people who are use to doing boat claims.

What is having Progressive through USAA mean? I ask because my boat coverage is a separate line item on my homeowners policy with the AAA (American Automobile Association). Is the USAA part of the AAA network? And do they subcontract with Progressive? My extra cost for the boat over my home only insurance premium is very reasonable. But I have the insurance by this means mainly for liability concerns or something really major ... rather than anticipating reimbursement for the routine "bump and scrape".

I have progressive "through" USAA too. USAA doesn't do boats anymore i guess, so they farm it out to progressive. Still, best price around, I've found. Never had a claim though.

Progressive has a REALLY BAD customer satisfaction rating. One reason they advertise so heavily is to replace cancellations. :D

Guys,

I was with Ocean Underwriters some years ago & was very dissatisfied with them on a small claim.

Progressive gave me a very good quote & I went with them. The next's year quote jumped 50%. No claim, nothing. They never gave me a reason except some hurricane that hit in another part of the country. I remember the lady said well we had hurricane......which I replied, "Lady, that hurrucane had nothing to do with me or my area.

So I jumped ship and have been with BoatUS since. They have a good rating for processing claims & competetive pricing.

But from my experience, I don't care for Progressive.

USAA started as an automotive insurance company for military personnel and decendants. Then moved on to banking and investments. Excellant service. They are not connected to AAA. (unless at a high level)

I just got quotes for my 25' Oday from USAA/Progressive and from BoatUS. BoatUS has the oil spill coverage, Progressive does not mention it on the quote. Progressive had higher value for equipment replacement than BoatUS.

Both were within $10. One was $318. Forget which one.

USAA is constantly ranked high for insurance, banking and investments so I would expect they would only partner with someone who provided good service.

So I am now wondering if I need the fuel/oil spill coverage? I would expect that would be good for powerboaters or boats will large gas or diesel fuel tanks but for my little 3 gallon fuel tank?
I might hole another boat but would imagine that if my bow was to hole a hull that boat would be much larger than mine and my boat would be the loser.

As a relative newbie to sailing I appreciate your opinions on this.

USAA is for military and dependents. Started out as officer only insurance and moved on to cover enlisted and dependents. If you were in the military it was about the only insurance you ever considered as they understood the military needs and had great rates (plus their risk pool was only military officers who are generally a good risk).

I have my boat insurance through USAA but not progressive. They sourced mine to Markel who I have been very dissatified with. We had a lightening strike this summer (actually an EMP event that zapped 18 boats in our marina). Guys with progressive and state farm got their insturments replaced quickly. I have markel and none of my instruments have been replaced yet. They were ALL sent back to Raymarine and the ones that are suspect are being repaired instead of replaced. I've been told that they should be back and installed in the next 2 weeks so 1/2 of july, all of august / sept and part of October.

Once this is done I was going to switch out all my USAA (auto, home, boat, excess, etc) to another carrier. But if they have switched from Markel to progressive I may just demand to be switched as well.

Thanks,

Glenn

Finished signing up with Progressive/USAA for my watercraft insurance. They were not much different than BoatUS cost wise for comparable limits. They did not require a survey, photos or other documentation. Of course, my 32 yr old Oday isn't expensive either.

Ward, be prepared. Next renewal you will find a significant increase in your premium. Progressive seems to get you in at a low rate, then raise it considerably at renewal for absolutely no reason. Chuck

I would not leave the boat in the water without the spill coverage....

and I refuse to support the actions of Peter Lewis (chairman, ceo, founder or some such) in any way

and having had them for a "stated value" motorcycle policy that they refused to pay ANYTHING on it being hit and run....

I would strongly urge you to not be disappointed at claim time....

best of luck

Just reviewing this thread in light of Sandy visiting my marina. Still waiting to hear if I suffered damage.
BoatUS called out spill coverage seperate. Progressive includes it in Liability coverage.
If my rate goes up next year, I will move to BoatUS. I was tossing a coin and went with Progressive due to the tie with USAA.
Found out BoatUS is reimbursing it's insured 50% of storm prep haul out costs. If I had known that I would gone with them.

I sure didn't expect that I would be worried about hurricane damage after owning my boat for just 5 weeks and having insurance for just 4 weeks.

Of course, when I was 18 I totaled my first car only a week after getting it. Hadn't even paid the first insurance premium on it.
