Sailortonyb and others. I use Progressive. I have a 77 C30 which I asked them to insure at $15,000. This also includes all the fixins because the marina requires me to carry 300,000 min liability. The deductible is $1000. All this for $1,200 a year. IS THIS A GOOD DEAL??? Please tell me your thoughts. They did not require a survey. Boat US offered the same insurance for the same price but required a survey. I have some damage from Katrina that is in the process of being fixed, that is why I don't want to get a survey. By the way does anyone know fiberglass... if so come to the Gulf Coast and GET RICH :)

That seems high

I just paid the yearly premium for my 1993 h27. Agreed value $22,000. $300,000 liability. zero deductible. Coverage anywhere in USA and up to 50nm off coast. I can add tow insurance for $55.00, but haven't checked out others for that yet. The insurance company is Allied. I have had my home and cars with them for many years and find them easy to deal with and very fair on claims. Ward PS.. being in Iowa would certainly lower the rate although they are aware I tow it to the coast and Great Lakes to cruise

Same policy

value of 80k, 1k deductible and it is just over 1k per year. No survey either which saves a good $500+ every few years. Only downside is that this is not a "marine" policy. I did ask about the Jones act and the agent actually did know what it was. Whether they would pay a claim under it is another question though. I am not asking since it is far easier to be forgiven than to get permission. I have no claims and a good record driving cars. They do a credit check and my wife had changed several credit card companies to take advantage of zero interest offers and that showed up as a negative on my report. I am not sure how much that affected my rate though. Get towing from Vessel Assist. It costs a little more but it is a much better value and the insurance company will never find out if you get towed and later use that to raise you raise your rates.

seems high, but we are not in the same water.

That is like comparing apples and oranges. What we pay in other parts of the country is just not the same as yours. You need to get feedback from local sailors in your area. Here in the Northwest, we don't have events like Katrinas, but now and then we may have an earthquake or volcano or two, which does not impact boats too much. Plus, the type of sailing water makes a big difference too. So what we pay for insurance means nothing to you. To give you an example, here is what we pay with BoatUS. We have had the insurance since the boat was new in 1992, so a survey was moot. It was insured the second it came off the cradle. The boat is a ’92 h37.5, insured for $120k, liability-$500k, deductible-$1150, and my annual premium is $655. The coverage area is Puget Sound and BC, not west of Nigei Island and not west of Cape Flattery. When we go outside of the coverage area, like going to Alaska, there is additional temporary coverage available, and not very expensive either. We have been very happy with BoatUS, plus they insure only boats, and they really know boats, and they really take care of their members. We would not go with any other insurance company.

Extremely HIgh

I have an agreed value of 42,000, 1,200 deductible, 500k fuel spill, 300k liability, 500 personal for 385 per year Boat US. I like the comfort of spill protection. A $500 deductible increased the annual premium to 415 per year. I went with the higher deductible because I am only concerned with large losses. Hope this helps. cheers!

Allstate is very reasonable if you are already a customer. I insure two cars and a home through them. They also give a discount for CG Auxillery Cert. and Good Driver credit. My insured boat value is $90K 1% deductable $300K liability etc. Premium is $325 year. Covers Pacific Coast from Mendocino to San Diago.

FOR BEST MARINE INSURANCE

Traum, If the insurance will not pay, then it is money down a rat-hole. There are many who commonly denie claims, and large companys too. True, most marinas require 300K liability, but if they suspect your boat is a wreck or just live-aboard, most want you out too. If you leave for the hills, your boat sinks, it is an expensive job to bring her up, and there are pollution fines CFR laws. jharbottle@hagerty.com are okay and known to pay out, domingob@scottsdaleins.com are also a good co. thurston@farmersagent.com are just getting more into yachts, but my favorite, and know not to bitch nor beef is: insabs@yahoocom A.B. Stevenson Co very reputable. A mistake many make is thinking they are stuck with agents in their area. Beware of any carrier that DOES NOT require a survey, and read that fine print. How can you expect good coverage from a co like that? Bottom line, there is no free-lunch. Want to get educated on insurance? Start with a movie, Erin Brokavich; true story.

BoatUS limitation

...Is it new news only to me that BoatUS will not insure any boat value over $100,000 if the boat is on a mooring instead of in a slip...

Whenever I have attempted

to buy hull insurance as soon as they learn that the boat was built in 1968 they stop me and say they just don't insure boats that old.

Allstate ............

has no idea how to be in the boat insurance business but they have my policy because they are CHEAP and so am I. They insured two vessels for me that were over thirty feet long and over twenty years old AND NEVER ASKED FOR A SURVEY. I had one small claim of about $1000 they paid with no hesitation

Prior to Katrina, i had American Reliable Ins. Co. It took over 5 months of wrestling with them until i finally resolved my claim. Any way, prior to Katrina i had 30,000 on the boat, 3000 in pesonal belongings and 300,000 liability. I have a 100 ton masters license and that accounted for a substantial discount. My premiums were $240 per year. After Katrina, before they inspected and totalled me out, i had an increase in new premiums to $750 per year. It turns out, that after my claim, i cannot get insurance again with them on another boat. That ought to give you a general idea of pre and post katrina prices. So far my ONLY offer has been to get insurance with a "storm wind exclusion". I am still looking. Life is just not going to be the same. I thought the Ms. coast would rebuild quickly because of all the jobs offered by the casinoes. After talking to many Ins. Co. agents, seems that homeowners are running into the same stone wall that I am. If their house was totalled they cant get Ins. so they aint gonna rebuild. Life's a bitch, aint it?
