Oday 26 Surronding lakes of the NE
Hi everyone! Idk if you remember or not but @TheBigDeal and I bought that 1984 O'day 26 "the flying liability" and have been working on it to be a fun weekend cruiser. I wanted to post some update photos of what we've done to it and go over some of the upgrades.
Here's some of the before photos of how sanding went

Then here's with her new coat

As you can see its not a perfect paint job, we still have to sand and buff some of the beauty marks out of it (such as the back) but shes come a long way! We tried to roll and tip the boat first as many sailors have suggested and well that how most of our beauty marks ended up on the boat. I would recommend spraying it with a gun and compressor. Hindsight I should have done that first and reduced the paint about another 5% when spraying but hey that's why you have sandpaper and a buffing. From here Ill sand down some of the marks with 1000/1500 grit, buff with a non-wax compound and coarse wool pad, working up to sanding with a finishing 2500 grit and a one stage wax compound with a fine buffer (more than likely foam)
Now if you saw our other post
You'll see how she cleaned up, But I've made some headway in rewiring all of the electronics and adding in some new goodies into the boat. That will be its own post after some awaited parts arrive in the snail mail but we have replaced the old counter!
here the old 80's counter

Then heres the new one!

We redid the steps as well and most of the cabinets, you can also see some of the goodies there on the wall and yes I know the light is an eye sore until I make a base to mount it in the ceiling but hey its a real swivel light now. The whole counter is butcher block top with a deep sink and a well mounted pot filler for the sink. There is also a fridge under there as well (I know its not level yet I have to make a stopper underneath it) But yes that is where she is at! I hope you enjoy and we plan to sail her very soon. Thanks for stopping by!

Uhm no .. We sail out of Milwaukee . Every year I try to upgrade Enigma , more comfortable , safer .. I'm not entirely convinced there is much more I can do to make her faster ...

Looks good so far! Check for deck/window leaks and rebed your lower gudgeon. This part frequently dips below water and mine had zero sealant and a rotted core!

Thank you for the advice! We only have one leaky window on the starboard side. as long as its tighen down right it wont leak. As for the lower gudgeon I am unsure and will have to check it!

Ah the lower leaking gugeon.. The first time I backed the Oday into the water I wasn't aware that the rudder hung
lower than any other part of the part of the boat. Yes, the gudgeon and pintles stayed together and cracked the transom.
It was a pretty horrifying sound . Once I crawled into the cockpit to asses ,I could see that the lower gudgeon had been leaking for some time .
I rebuilt the transom from the inside using 1/4" mahogany that was scored vertically to allow for the curve of the transom.
Following the fiberglassing of that ,I then used 3/4" mahogany plywood scored vertically .
I used six layers of 10 ounce cloth between the 1/4" and the 3/4" . I repeated the same number of layers on the outside of the 3/4" .
I drilled the pintle mounting holes oversize and filled in with more fiberglass . That part of the boat has been leak free ever since

@artleyt115 Mine wasn't leaking into the boat but the plywood in the transom was absorbing it. Your rudder is by far one of your most important controls. I discovered the state of my transom after the thick steel of the gudgeon ripped all the way through in a storm. O'Day used silicone to seal everything. Silicone almost always fails, especially 40+ years later
@Timm R Oday25 I'd be willing to bet you could bounce bullets off of your transom!

Oh my, that seems like a nightmare. I am definitely going to check this out. I'd hate to rip out my gudgeon. My chainplates were redone a year before we got our boat so I am hoping at some point it would have been redone. if not Ill do it myself

Bulkheads .. I've replaced the starboard side . It was very straight forward. It wasn't rotted . The holes for the chainplate had elongated . I also added a stainless steel backing plate on the other side of the bulkhead to the stainless nyloc nuts would sandwich the bulkhead.
It figured it was as good as time as any to redo the vanity . We've never used the sink , so out it came . Aromatic cedar lines the back of the vanity now.
I also removed the hose from the sink to the outside thru-hull . Now that is solely used for the bilge pump .I have the wood for the port side . I just want plan out how I'm going to replace the folding table and install some shelving behind it ,when it's folded up

I'd double check your bulkheads for rot around the chainplates. It's a common failure
We do have new bulkheads in and in the previous post you can see them, They are in very good shape and haven't had any leak issues from the chain plates (luckly).

Did you remove the cabinet as well as the sink?

I'm picturing some shelving with a folding table attached. Is this correct?

@artleyt115 If it's reasonably possible, I'd recommend getting your inboard running. It's a huge difference in ease of control and in heavy waves. I currently have both an inboard and outboard. The boat makes a wake with both at WOT

I would have loved to have had the inboard with the boat. The previous owner had removed it because the gentleman who raced this boat before him had seized the old yammer. So he sold it, I have all the old original parts to make it work if I had a motor but we've decided to fill that spot with a genny and run the exhaust through the old port.
