Progress on H22

I'm making progress on an almost total rebuild of my H22. I decided to replace and relocate the electrical panel as shown in the picture. I'm waiting for my VHF radio to arrive which will be mounted under this panel. After I completed the new panel I decided to make a similar one on the port side but just have a shelf with a front lip. Never enough storage space. This is my first sailboat and love this H22. I've seen newer and bigger boats but this one seems unique in it's detail and use of space. I want to thank all the folks here that have helped this fledgling sailor whom have been invaluable in the help I've received. Thanks, Pete

Thanks Jim

Jim, Thank you. My neighbor has seen me in and out of my boat for weeks but didn't have the nerve to ask me what I've been doing. The other day he finally asked me. I told him I was rebuilding my boat. His reply " Oh, I thought your wife put you in the dog house".

Another progress photo

Here's another photo of the new interior. After relocating the electrical panel I decided to install a wood panel along the entire length of the lower bench panel. Of course I now had to do the same on the starboard side. At the top middle of the new wood panel I installed a 1 watt light fixture. In the photo it just looks like a black mark. This light shines down to illuminate the floor deck and I installed two more, each one approx. middle of the table. These lights are great as night lights and use very little power.

One VHF suggestion

The VHF in my H22 is mounted on the port side of the boat. It is mounted on the ceiling near the companionway hatch. This makes it very accessable from the outside of the boat so that you can stay in the cockpit and still use the radio. My depth finder is mounted in the same area. It is on a swinging mount so that it sits right beside the door and you can see it from the cockpit. When not in use it swings inside of the cabin for storage (a really cool bracket made by the previous owner). Are you going to wire in ship to shore in your boat or do you already have it? I have it wired into mine (previous owner). It is very useful (especially if you overnight at other docks). I have to try to get some good photos of my boat next week and I will try to get some good interior shots of my VHF and Depth finder for you. If you look at the photo, you can't quite see the vhf radio.....

Thanks for the suggestion Bad Obsession...

I'll certainly consider your suggestion for the radio & shore power. I hope you can post a photo of that mount you have for your depth finder. I'm curious what that looks like. In this photo I'm showing the sink area and the two panels on the front side. They are mounted with a continuous hinge so that they create a table when raised up. It just gives a bit more table area when we will have guests and a handy place to put things when using the stove. Under the sink I installed an auto/manual bilge pump and ran the hose out to the aft port side. I'm kinda surprised that this boat did not come with one from the factory.

New electrical Panel

How did you bond the bracket for adding the new panel. Are you running two batteries and do you have shore power. Thanks, work looks great.

Saltydog, here's what I did...

Saltydog, The additional bracketl (right side of new panel) is fastened at top with screws and silicone to a rib @ the ceiling. I also used silicone where that bracket meets the hull. There's also a shelf between the right & left side of each bracket at the bottom of the electrical panel. I did the same thing on the port side with a shelf and piece of wood that runs between the two lower wings of the brackets that creates a cubby for storage. I'm going to do the same under the electrical panel to add more storage. I am going to run two batteries as I'm planing to buy a Coolmatic refrigerator and place it under the sink which will be dedicated to one battery. This refrigerator is also a freezer and can run for two days @ 37º and not kill the battery. It automatically cuts off at (3) preset voltages leaving no less than 10v. Additionally, I will be charging both batteries with a new Nissan 8hp 4 stroke. I do plan to install shore power but will probably keep the AC simple, perhaps (2) outlets.

under the sink storage

I keep my microwave under the sink. I usually have my cooler on the starboard side of the table. I keep one leaf up and the cooler under it. It is unfortunate, but after you put so many gadgets and toys on the H22, you start running out of places to put things. Then again, it makes you get really creative. I am running only one house battery (I don't have a refridge and I like to go into docks when I can). The previous owner put an onboard battery charger and the unit sits on the port side quarter berth wall (bolted in through the area of the cockpit). I have a separate switch for the battery charger on my ship to shore circuit breaker pannel. I am going to my boat on Monday. I will try to remember the digital camera so I can get some photos of my cabin.

Beautiful Work!

Pete, that is really interesting and beautiful also! I want to thank you all for sharing your projects and ideas- they give the rest of us hope and comfort! My vhf is mounted on a shelf just aft of the stbd back rest and it is pretty much out of the way, but it is accessible in a hurry. I love Bad Obsession's hatchboards! Unicorn's cabin is still fairly stock , but it sure is cozy! Ain't 22's wonderful?

back supports

Pete, curious about the back supports that Hunter provided. I really think they suck and am planning to use only one of the. Actually making more storage room because I'm building a cabinet to replace the sink/step down into the cabin. Since I don't see the mounting bracket, I assume that you are just eliminating the support as well. Are you just using large pillows?

Back supports

George, I do plan to keep the back supports but had not installed the hardware for them at the time of the picture as I'm re-upholstering the interior and installing another shelf behind the backrest. I replaced the original brackets with white ash. I glued two 1x6 pieces, sealed, stained and spar urethane. Every piece of plywood/veneer wood on the interior was totally shot when I got this boat. Although I'm modifying several things on this boat I'm trying to keep every addition in theme with the original look of the boat.
