I have a 1988 Hunter 285 fitted with a Profurl N31 headsail furling system which is about 10 yrs old. Over the past few months, the resistance to furl/unfurl has increased to where the unit is now almost unusable. Even without the sail installed, the drum unit turns only with great resistance. Halyard wrap is/has not been a problem. Anyone experience this or have a solution? Thanks.

Probably need to service the drum

I don't know which model you have, but most if not all furlers can be disassembled, cleaned of junk and corrosion, lubricated and reassembled. Be sure not to loose any of the small parts that may be found in there. If it's at all confusing, polaroid or digital photos taken while breaking it down may make the reassembly easier. A decent lithium or winch grease would be good on the bearings, but maybe you ought to check the manual or with Profurl for your particular model. Good Luck! :)
