Seldon
I purchased a 1984 Pearson 303 with an in-mast furler (about ther same age). It is made by Seldon and is a bolt on kind of deal to the original mast. It has an extruded aluminum cover that is pop rivited on the mast to cover things up. I didn't get any instruction on how to use it... however have been learning along the way. Need to use both the outhaul and furler to get the sail out... furls much easier coming in off a starboard tack... need to have some pressure on the outhaul when you reef in. My main sail is a laminate specifially cut for the Seldon system. All lines lead to the cockpit... and it is now very easy to control and use (it was frustrating at first). There will be the day that it jams... will cross that bridge when I come to it. Hopefully it won't be blowing a gale... as I haven't figured out what I would do. It has its quirks... the first time you bend the sail on... you'll probably have to winch it out cause of the folds. Boom needs to be at the right height (can't be too low) when furling in ot it'll bunch up. I am not an around the bouys racer... or interested in that exta 1/2 knot... it's all about the convenience. I would get one on my next boat if I had the opportunity. It has to be a $10,000 item. Happy furling.
