Hi Josh.
My Vega is hull # 1592, and was supposedly built in 1972. The engine, ( Volvo Penta MD6 ) was built in ' 72 for sure; the date is on the specs plate.

I've got hull #2209 and I'm pretty sure it was built in 1973. A
certificate from Lloyds in Germany that came with the boat is dated
february 1973.

I always suspected that the last four numbers of the Hull I.D. were
the month and year the Vega was build. My last four numbers are 1173.
(November 1973)Any ideas? Does this seem to fit anyone elses Vega?

No. The numbers go from the first produced boat and upwards. Mine is
#808, and was made 1970.

Hello all,
I wasn't quite clear with my statement. The Hull I.D. number on my
boat is AMN021411173. I believe the AMN stands for "Albin Marin",
the Manufacturer, the 02141 is for the number boat in series starting
with number one, (or the two thousandth one hundred and forty first
boat built), and I had suspected that the last four numbers were the
month and year the boat was made, in my case 1173, or November of
1973. Hope this helps. Does anyone's Vega's HIN seem to agree with
this scheme?

Lyic (hull #120) was laid up in 1967 and commisioned in 1969 as a Larrson
Vega. Anybody have any knowledge as to when Larrson became Albin? Walt

Hi,

The manual for the MD6A says that regular compression is 330-330. Is that
mesure good for a warm or a cold engine?

If the test has been done only after 5 minutes a gave 240, is there any
chance that it will go up when then engine will be warm?

If not, from your experience, 240 is : not very good, bad, very bad???
Should I run away from that boat? Or that could do a few years like that?

Hi Marie

These engines are now 35 years old. They will go on for ever if looked
after but can also fail at any time. Dont let the engine determine your
decision of the Vega, if she is a fine boat then go for it. You could
get a Vega with a compression like new that failed the following day, I
know of a Vega with an MD6A that's engine has been on it last legs for
the the preceding 15 years and is still going!

Thanks for your encouraging attitude. Maybe the English is correct. The problem was to find the correct words in the subject. I think I had to choose simplier alternatives than I would have if i wrote in my own language.

I later found out Larsson Trading changed name to Albin Marin in 1970.

Marie,

I'm not sure if 240 is a good or bad number in and of itself. The things that you should be
looking for is if the engine starts right away, even when cold, and if it seems to run
smoothly and give you plenty of power; if there is any smoke coming from the exhaust; if
there is a lot of knocking even after the engine has warmed up. The real insight you get
from a compression test is checking if each of the cylinders have compression values
similar to each other-if one is significantly lower (say by more than 10%) that might
indicate a problem with the compression in that particular cylinder.
The compression reading is also dependent on things like the state of the battery, the
temperature outside, and the individual instrument your mechanic used to measure the
compression. One would think that your mechanic should have been able to determine if
the readings he was getting made sense.

Basically, if your mechanic didn't find any problems that he or she thought was noteworthy
my guess is that you're probably fine. Also, what Steve said about not buying a boat
merely because of the engine is true. If you think that she is the boat for you, I would
certainly not advice against it based on the compression test results.
