I just put on a 2001 9.9 4 stroke Tohatsu on my Hunter 25. Then extra weight made the bow rise approx 2 " and show my bottom paint. So I added some ballast,(approx 150lbs) in the v-berth storage areas down low to get my waterline level again. At 1/2 throttle I can get about 4 kts. At full throttle I only get 4.7 kts and I'm pushing water with the outboard transom. This is strange to me due to the fact when shes sitting on the calm water there is not much of the lower unit in the water, yet I'm getting the big boat trying to plane effect when I running at full and the water is damn near to the bottom of the motor casing. When sitting on calm water with no one in the boat my trim plates are parallel to the water. Is this correct? Is this a prop issue? I've heard there are "thrust" props which are very flat (no pitch) and "power" props (alot of pitch). I don't know the pitch of mine, but it looks like alot of pitch to it. It feels like the prop is really "digging" and pulling the stern down. I feel I should be able to approach my hull speed of 6.5 kts with a 9.9hp motor. What can I do to change this?

You need to do two things.

- change the motor mount pin so the motor is at a different angle to the transom - reduce the diameter and pitch of the propeller That information will all be found in the Tohatsu engine manual.

Broad range

Tohatsu has a broad range of diameter/pitches for my motor. Which to choose? Any one have a similar situation? boat-25' / displacement-4400 / Keel-fixed@4'

I tried...............

all the different position pins for trim. Same performance. Plowing water with the outboard transom and only .7 knots dif between 1/2 and full throttle. So, it has to be prop related, right?? Just looking at it, I can tell by some of the other props I've seen, it has a lot of pitch. I'm pretty sure its 8.5 diameter/7.5 pitch. Would a prop with alot of pitch cause the outboard to "dig" and pull the stern down? Would a prop with less pitch solve this issue? I'm getting tired of my feet getting wet while motoring due to the cockpit drain flooding back in because it so far underwater in the stern. :( Jeff
