Problems with NASA Clipper Wind Instrument

Hi all.
After repositioning the masthead sender for my NASA Clipper wind
instrument it seems to be giving under-estimates of the actual windspeeds.

I noticed this when out for a sail on Sunday in moderate winds (say
15kts), the display seemed stuck at speeds around 5kts.

When wind increased the readings seemed to free up and display showed 20kts.

I was out on Monday in strong F6-7 winds and display showed 30kts at
times which was OK.

Is this just a "running-in" issue or do I have a dud sender?

(I've seen some negative comments about these senders on various sailing
web forums.)

(I have the "averaging " option set if that is relevant.)

Any comments welcome,

John

Is the anemometer in clear air above the mast, or in its lee where it
will be in turbulent air? This would affect the averaged speed.

Hi Alisdair
I moved the strut up 6 inches so that the sender is in now clear air
above the mast - before that it was in the lee on a starboard beam
reach. See
Maybe the problem will have resolved itself after the strong winds on
Easter Monday. I don't fancy having to go up the mast twice more to
remove & replace the sender!

Thanks

John

John, I am curious as to what that little bottle of suspicious looking fluid is in your recent work photos? -Tim

Hi Tim
no, not liquid refreshment (if that is the suggestion :) )...

It is a small (1/2 litre) bottle of oil (was generic engine oil - I now
use more viscous chainsaw oil) that is fed by gravity to the packing
gland (forget correct name) round driveshaft - shown in

Generic engine oil drains much too quickly in Summer weather, chainsaw
oil seems to work well.
