Problems with chart tables

I think I've brought this up before, but can't find it in the archives.
Big problem (imho) with the chart table design.
The issue is they use what are called "Hollywood Hinges"
What happens with the lid open, is there is a large gap, the width of the table, between the 3 hinges.
Well, when is the tabke open?
When you have a bunch of crap on the top of the table, and you've just trying to peek inside.
Well, what hapoens?
All the pencils, and what have you, slide down the lid into the crack.
Then "CRUNCH!", as you get pencils, dividers, valuable swiss watches, jammed in the crack.
So, in no time you damage the chart table tip, and possibly some swiss watches.

So, what's the solution?
Easier than you think ( in principal) but a little trick in practice.,I have a whole write up on this.

The solutionis to remove the Hollywood latches,,
And install black plastic piano hinge.
Firstly, it looks GREAT
Secondly, no more damaged desk top

Now, it's a little tricky to do this.
If your intererested, I'll explain it all

Art,

Very nice solution. Thanks for sharing. On my table the there were these raised metal hinges out in the middle of the table. They were a big pain when I would try and plot courses on my paper charts (I know who does that anymore?). Obviously, this was a long time ago. Never the less, the ruler would get wonky and the pencil would poke a hole in the chart. And I did crunch a pencil in the gap that would open up when lifting either of the two lids on mine. So I removed the four hinges and installed concealed hinges on the mating edges. That gave me a perfectly flat surface and the way they open keeps the corner edges in contact.

Did you ever manage to pinch the palm of your hand in that gap? I did and it really hurt.

Allan

I have the exact problem with my chart table on our 2006 Hunter 45CC. So I am very interested. Please give me all the details, as it will be my next project.
Thanks, Jeff

Long winter, seems we are digging deep into the barrel. Good idea which I think would reduce the problem; I have always said "one hand for the boat and one hand for yourself" except when closing the chart table.

I'm just documenting this now

I went and purchased another hinge so that I can show all you guys exactly how to do this.
Honestly, this is a very tricky thing to get right the first time, and if it's a little off, it will look awful.
To install a blind piano hinge, usually everything is fixtured up, etc. This takes a little more on the fly approach.
Anyway, I'll make sure it's easy to follow

But I'm having problems putting all the photos in document the site will accept.
I'll do a PDF, and get it online in a day or so

I gave the document, with photos, to the forum moderator.
He's kindly offered to post it, so you can all see how to do this terrific upgrade.

Good luck!
