I have a small but concerning leak from the stuffing box. Does anyone know what size packing is required? I have a hunter 27 with a 8HP Renault engine a 1980 vintage.

Our "experience" is that 1" shafts can take EITHER 3/16" or 1/4". Buy both, return what you don't use or give it to a dock neighbor. Play it forward.

I have a 1" shaft in a 27' boat (different engine & boat).
I recommend you start with 3/16" packing.
Remember, the packing needs to fit into the gland easily. The stuffing box nut(s) are used to put pressure on the packing which causes the packing to flatten and will fill any voids.
If you have to cram 1/4" packing in there then the compression nuts will not have much effect, if at all, and your stuffing box may get hot and perhaps will score your shaft.

According the info sheet no need for the packing to drip, as the packing being what it is will not heat up. Not cheap $17 for a 24 inch piece of packing
