I am trying to use garmin gps with serial port connection and my laptop has no serial port. When I try useing usb converter it won't work ,garmin says nmea won't work with usb and dell say's use ps2 to serial converter but won't work. Anyone solve this problem. nick

Hi I had the same problem with Toshiba. I am now using a serial/USB converter that is working perfectly with both Garmin Bluechart as well as VNS from Nobeltec. I cannot tell you what converter I'm using but It was sold to my by Steveston Marine in Vancouver. If you look them up on the net, you could phone Rahim Kaba (Vancouver Granville Island store) and ask him which converter he sold me. Hope this helps PS. I did notice that I needed to have the program running before inserting the cable, otherwise my computer went ballistic (windows opening all over the place...)

USB needs to work with the computer
I run a IBM with my Garmin and everything turned up is the problem is between the laptop and the USB. Some work better then others and the manufacture (Dell) should be able to tell you which one you need. I belive that came from the Cap'n software site. Good Luck.

Nick I got a Belkin serial usb adapter that worked pretty good with my ASUS computer. Dell should be able to help you find a compatible adapter

Find the proper drivers
I had the same problem. My laptop doesn't have a serial port, only a usb port. I purchased a serial to usb converter that came with the driver software from my local computer store. It still didn't work till I went to the web site for the maker of the converter and updated the drivers. Now it works great.

I have a belkin converter that I used with the cap't program.. It worked well. I didn't like all the wires so I bought a usb converter from west maine and it work well also. I have a toshiba lap top.

;D GOOD NEWS GPS IS WORKING
After almost giving up with calls to dell and garmin for help with my problem gps which they could not solve the problem,belkin teck guy pointed out that I had some kind of problem with a communication port (com4)so I disabled it and was able to set up (com5)for the gps connection. I also had to use the usb port next to ps2 port for it to work today while driving around town. I'll be giving it a real test saturday going to new jersy and than sunday to atlantic city boat show. nick
