Try Force 11

I would try Force 11 with the adage, " you thought that was rough!" Good luck, I have trouble with my Admirable in a Force 3. r.w.landau

After being the Lieutenant JG....

for 34 years, I have found it easier to agree with the Admiral. I have found that to be the most painless soulution to disagreements..

Avoiding the Guillotine!

I think maybe a REAL answer might be in order. Keeping the Admiral happy is job 1. That old tee shirt slogan: "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy" applies here. The way to beat it is to learn all that you can about easing your boat's motion. 1. Learn all that you can about sail "Twist" and apply it when she's aboard. Twisting off the top of your sails brings the center of effort down and that helps the boat to move well in bigger wind without as much heel. 2.Reef early. 3. Bear off a bit more than you might if you were out with your sailing buddies. 4. Never yell if you can avoid it, and try to teach her that you sometimes yell to be expediant or to emphasize that something NEEDS to happen, never to belittle her. 5. Get her as involved in the process of sailing the boat as you can, the more she knows, the more she'll understand how you BOTH are keeping her safely out of danger. She'll be more comfortable because she knows what danger is and isn't, and how to stay safe. 6. Try to be a sailing partner, not the boss(I know, I know, that's REALLY hard!) besides, if you get her really involved an amazing thing will happen: she'll want to go sailing! Even in big weather! AND she just might get you some really cool sailing gizmo that you actually want or need as a present to BOTH of you! Happy New Year from Cap'n Ron and Admiral Wendy of the s/v Best Revenge H 40.5

Force 10 = GALE

A Force 10 wind on the Beaufort Wind Force Scale is a whole gale. Winds are blowing from 56mph to 64mph. Trees being uprooted, and the sea takes on a white frothy appearance. Hopefully you are in well protected anchorage riding it out.

Been There

I agree with your admiral

I've never sailed in force 10 winds. With good weather planning and a lot of luck, I hope that trend continues.

why i sail without mine

thats why i sail alone . i dont have to answer to anyone but me. thats why im out there . in every other aspect of our lives we have personal resposibility either removed or inappropriately placed on us . not so on the water. i believe this is what has ultimately brought us to the sea. to "transact personal business" in the company of others ? no ,thanks. this may be too sobering but for many it is the truth of our endevours. if it hits close to home maybe its time to look within . fair winds to us all.

Don't know anyone who *likes* to sail in Force 10!

Man, that's some rough weather - no fun! You have to be literally INSANE to actually *enjoy* going out in that crap!! I can see making the best out of it if you get *caught* in it but to deliberately go out in it?!?! I don't blame her one little bit!! LaDonna
