problem, help

i have the universal model 25x-p diesel engine. when i have the engine running and i go to 3000 rpm the motor will hesitate and then drop back down to around 2000 and will run steady at 2000 and below. i am thinking fuel pump but before i buy a new one and go parts swapping. any help.

Air filter

A clogged air filter will cause your engine to not reach or maintain maximun RPM. I'm not sure what type of element you have, but take a look at it. Good luck

govenor???

Patrick,I have the same engine and was told there's a govenor on it to hold it at 2000 RPM. I can push it beyond 2000 but it always comes back....I'm still new to the boat so I haven't toyed with the throttle system yet. Maybe Catalina yachts can give you a quick answer...Richard

3000 RPM?

I have the same engine and get nearly to hull speed at about 2300 rpm. I rarely run mine over this rpm.
