My H31 has an external iron keel. After blasting it down to bare metal, should it be primed before putting on bottom paint? If so, does it matter what type of primer I use?

Thanks.

On my iron keel, I've had good service from this stuff:
http://shop.hunterowners.com/prod.php?13021/Interlux Interprotect® 2000E⁄2001E & 2002E⁄2001E Kits
Very important to clean the keel immediately after blasting .. wipe down with acetone.. then begin coating as soon as the acetone flashes off.. Two or three coats is good applied to the paint instructions. Just before the final primer coat sets up, put a coat of bottom paint on to get good adhesion.

For just a "touch-up" spot, I've ground off the rust, wiped the dust off, wiped the bare metal with solvent, and lastly quickly sprayed it with Rustoleum metal primer (the white stuff). I then go back over each primed spot with brushed-on bottom paint before rolling on a coat of bottom paint (CSC).

It would probably be best if you blasted a small portion (couple of square feet) at a time to minimize the oxidation of the steel while it is exposed to the air. Then follow Kloudie's instructions.

I'm planning to blast the entire keel. Thanks, that answers my question.
