Priming the barrier coat before painting??????

#1...ok ....i am in the middle of doing a barrier coat using West systems epoxy....i am at the sanding off the gel coat stage with a random orbit sander and when through will wipe it clean with acetone and then coat one coat with west epox then 5 to 6 coats of west epox with additive in the mix...then will let it cure...now with all that do ineed to put a primer on the new work or just coat it with the Trinadad copper paint ....

#2...a side question here.... i will put on one coat of Trinadad and it will be about 5 months before i put the other 2 coats on ...with in the 60 day period that i have been told is ok before splash...... is that time frame ok for recoating the Trinadad .....

You should really check the tech sheets for those paints.

The barrier coat I used, Sea Hawk, had a window in which the bottom paints had to be applied with no primer between them.

I've done more car stuff than boat stuff, but the car epoxy paints also have a window. There are two different types of bonds between paints. Your sanding gives a mechanical bond between the bottom and the barrier coat. If you then apply the bottom paint in the right time interval you will have a chemical bond between the epoxy barrier and the bottom paint.

With most car epoxy's if you miss the window then you lightly sand/scuff the epoxy and apply another coat and then go on.

The windows can be different for different paints and paints from different manufactures. You should be able to find a spec sheet for this for the paints you are using.

Usually you can go a little past the window as the manufacture is trying to protect themselves from mis-use, but I try to be within them.

Last year I painted my decks and used a PPG product called PSX 700. It is self priming and has the gloss of a urethane. I am very pleased with the results. It is a 2 part system and can be rolled on fairly easily. It took two coats to completely cover but the boat shines like new.
I work in the natural gas industry and we use this product on offshore platforms where the environment is extremely harsh. It holds up well offshore so I figured it would be great on my boat.

Must Use Primer

When I did the bottom job with west system epoxy, this is what I did:

I added a UV inhibitor to the last coat of epoxy that darkened it. Made it easier to see the layer in the future when removing paint.

Scrub hull with scotch brite pad to get rid of amine blush

I used a primer from interlux

Painted with an ablative paint (Ultima SR)
