Primer ?

I have a couple is places on my rudder where the bottom paint has chipped off showing the bare gel coat, (they used vinyl ester on these boats.) I also have a few bare spots on my lead keel.

I'm planning to have the bottom repainted. I'm thinking about buying a quart of barrier coat to touch up the gel coat. This is a lot more than I need, could it also be used on the bare lead on the keel ? I'm thinking about it being used more as a surfacer / primer than of course as a barrier on the keel.

Does the bare lead need any kind of primer before bottom paint ?

I'm looking at using Micron Extra as it works well in this area and we are sometimes in the river so need one for both fresh and salt water.

Any advice ?

Thanks, Bob

On small spots I've had good success with a thin layer of epoxy. I've used it on the lead of my keel and on the rudder. Micron CSC and Micron 66 seemed to stick to it just fine.

If blisters haven't been a problem for you, why bother with spot coating with a barrier coat? Just paint the spots with bottom paint and go sailing.

No problems with blistering. I thought with vinyl ester it had to be barrier coated if it was sanded. Where the paint is chipped I would sand it down to level the surface.

Also think the bare lead should be primed before bottom coating, so if I mix up some barrier coat thought I could prime the lead and seal the gel coat in one job.

Put barrier coat on all of your spots, keel included. This stuff is primer, nothing special. Really, it is basically a very good two part epoxy primer that you can essentially use anywhere. And will work fine on the keel, (I've done it several times)..

I also agree with that since nothing sticks like epoxy primer and then if you put the bottom paint over it in the correct window to have a good chemical bond you will have really good adhesion from the part being painted to the bottom paint. Bottom paint will adhere but the combination of the epoxy first and then the bottom I feel will adhere better,

Primer

Never used barrier coat and just feel would be good to just know
how it needs to be used,I guess the surface needs to be completely
cleaned to what bare gel coat and keel bare lead and it's a 2 part mix.
Sounds like something good to know and last time I did bottom paint I was told to use this primer from petitt and it was yellow type primer with no special time
frame when to add bottom paint.
My diver has told me my bottom is looking very good and used Sea Hawk
BIOCOP
Harder self polishing boosted ablative ,fresh or salt water
for the first time and I was told by other sailors last 3 years and I will see how well it does.

I think the bottom had Micron 66 on it. When it hit fresh water it "cornflaked". I was warned this bottom paint is not compatible with a lot of other products. The safest thing is to do is either prime it or use Micron Extra as it is compatible and also is good for both fresh and salt water.
Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated, Bob

Need to read the instructions for the paint your are using but with Sea Hawk's Tuff Stuff epoxy barrier paint you need to be down to the gel coat, clean and de-wax the surface and then sand with 80 grit so it has a good toothy surface to adhere to. You recoat when you can leave a thumb print but the paint doesn't come off on your thumb. It goes on with a higher build than say interlux so only needs 2-3 coats to have the same build thickness which saves some painting on your part.

If you go with 3, we did, and need to go overnight between coats it is better to go overnight between barrier coats and not the barrier to bottom paint coat. We put on 2 coats one day and then the next a third coat and then 2 complete coats of bottom paint and then another at the waterline where it wears the most. You also put the bottom paint on with the 'thumb print' method as an indicator when it is ready...

Surface prep and recoat windows are the key to getting the paint on so it will stay on,

All manufactures suggest that once blisters have been fixed to apply several coats of barrier coats. On cast iron, it is best to clean the surface if down to metal with sand paper, wire brush, etc... and then coat it with a paint primer that specifically says it contains zinc chromate to prevent rust. Following that fill in the voids to smooth out the area and I used a two part epoxy slow cure called Water Tite but found it to be the best and then applied barrier coat as stated above. If applying barrier coat to lead, make sure it is clean and wipe down with acetone and multiple rags.

When applying anti fouling paints to new barrier coatings, you will either have to apply a tie coat of some kind or simply sand that barrier coat for good adhesion of any anti fouling paint to adhere and again clean off the dust.

If putting a paint onto another unknown paint, suggest that you do a test patch first. :Your salesman should know his paints only if he knows them.

Not sure about other products but with Sea Hawk's barrier paint (2 part epoxy) and their anitfouling paints you can go straight from the barrier to the antifouling without another "tie coat" or sanding but you have to go between the one to the other preferably the same day or if you do the barrier at the end of one day and the antifouling the first thing the next day.

If you wait longer you do then need to sand the barrier paint before preceding. Same thing if you put on say one coat of barrier and wait more than a day you really need to re-sand the one coat lightly to give 'tooth' for the next coat. Always read the instructions and follow them as these paints aren't cheap and you don't want to have to re-do it,
