I'm a fairly large fellow. Too large to fit into the aft lazerette of my Hunter 31. So when I need to get work done down there I usually enlist the help of the Admiral. Last week I asked her to go down and take a look for the primary fuel filter and to get a number off it so I could buy a replacement. She claims all she saw connected to the tank was something that looks like a roundish brass expansion tank. She saw no "spin off" filter, no markings, no petcocks. Anybody have any idea what it is she is looking at? Is the Primary fuel filter MIA? I assume one was fitted from the factory...correct?

Jabco

It's probably a Jabco filter which is located in the fuel line just after the line leaves the tank. It's a brass case and has a filter inside. There should be a nut on the bottom of the case or alternately a ring which can be turned to open. I removed the Jabco filter because of location and installed a Raycor filter inside with engine compartment obviously before the engine and installed a fuel shut off valve immediatley before the Raycor filter.

No fun

The Jabco canister can be a PITA for anyone to crank loose. Might want to send down the guy in the next slip, since he will have had more experience. I have to use one of those odd oil filter wrenches to get a grip.

Don't over tighten the screw

The air vent screw is made of plastic. If you over tighten, you might break off the head, then you are in real doodoo. You can't buy just the plastic screw either. You have to buy the whole unit just to get another screw.

original was a spin on!

The original was a spin on filter (like an oil filter). I would suggest that you think about replacing it with a Racor or similar unit. There should also should be a shut off pet-cock just before the filter to shut of the fuel. Mine has been replaced so many years ago I cannot remember the actual brand.
