I just returned from a 7 day trip to the Canadian border (or nearly so). In the panhandle of Idaho, between Washington and Montana, are situated 3 large lakes: Cour D'elene Lake, Lake Pend O'reille, and Priest Lake. Last summer I sailed Lake Pend O'reille, and this year I went to Priest Lake. This being high summer in Northern Idaho, the weather at Priest Lake was very warm. Daytime temps of low 90's and nightime lows of 40's. Perfect. Water temps were right around 70 degrees on the surface. Winds were variable from dead calm at night to fresh winds in the PM. We experienced one good storm with a gully washer rain storm with lightening and thunder. We were tucked into bed and just watched the theatrics through the pop top cover. There are two parts to the lake, the upper and lower lake, and they are separated by a 21/2 mile waterway. The lower lake has a mixture of commercial, private and national park properties, and the upper lake is totally national forest, with no construction of any kind. The water clarity is the best I've seen, even better than Lake Pend O'reille. I'd estimate 50+ feet of visibility by staring down into the water by the boat docks.Priest lake has several islands, many larger than a couple of miles, and there are campsites on all but the smallest islands, which are pristine game preserves. Many of the campsites are in bear country, and metal lockers are provided in the camps to keep Yogi the Bear at bay. We solved the bear problem by sleeping on the hook every night. If you are thinking about a sailing destination with great beauty, consider Priest Lake, Idaho. John S
