Price of Hunter 430?

I am seriously considering buying a Hunter 430.

A quick survey on Yachtworld indicates prices from $60K all the way up to 126K. Similar year boats.

Of course I understand that maintenance and upgrades are part of the puzzle, but it seems a very large price differential for what are essentially identical factory made used boats. I called on the cheapest two and was told they were NOT damaged, blistered, engine shot, or soggy decks, etc. Basically both need a bit of updating but boat was all there and in decent to good condition overall. (I think they are both under contract by the way).

What am I missing? Why such the price difference?

What is a normal ”for sale by owner“ price of a 25-30 year-old 430 in decent shape?

You need more information to know the market value.
The list of items on the boat is needed.

Then check here for what a Bank would lend you on the boat.

I selected the year made as 1999. My H430 is 1998.

I share your question. I'm used to seeing the same boats of similar age to have a much more narrow price range. You have to consider that the low end may be a damaged or salvaged boats. The high end should be in excellent condition - one meticulous owner. Any of the boats may be mis-priced. Less likely if a broker offers it since they presumably know the market. The cheap ones may be priced for a quick sale - maybe someone needs to raise some cash. The more expensive ones may be someone not that serious about selling but if they got enough money then maybe. What does the middle of the market look like?
BTW why shop only boats "for sale by owner"?

Boat price is a fluid issue in Seattle. PacificNW market has a reputation for being higher than many other areas. New owners will pay more for a boat here if they can secure a boat slip with the boat. Marinas have long waiting lists that cost to get on them.

brokers can access actual sales prices reported which will be more informative to you than asking prices you see advertised. Ask a broker for sales info.

Location. The least expensive boats were in Florida and So Cal. Northern boats and fresh water boats tend to be a bit higher in price.

Length of time on the market, the longer its out there the lower the price.

Owner's reluctance to sell, price the boat high to see what happens. Closely related, owner's over valuation of their boat.

Contact a local broker who has a large inventory of sailboats, tell him what you are looking for. He has access to the actual sale prices as brokers are required to provide that information to be part of the Yachtworld.com network. They also have access to original asking price and time in the market.
