Preventive maintenance and when do you do it?

Hi: I am new to sailing. I bought a MacGregor 26S in July 2004 and got hooked! I moved up to a 1989 Catalina 30 in November 2003 and sail mostly on the James River in southeastern Virginia. "No Whining" has been well taken care of by her previous owners but I an wondering what I have to look forward to over the next 5-10 years as far as preventative maintenance. I know about the engine maintenance but I am talking more about the boat/sailboat particular stuff. I have seen some places where it is recommended to replace the standing rigging every 5-10 years depending on use. How long does the standing rigging last and how do you know? I am also wondering about the driveshaft packing gland and cutlass bearing. Without relying on the local marine mechanics how do you know if they need reworked? The hull bottom paint was in good shape when I had it surveyed last year and I plan to have it hauled and painted in the spring with Pettit Trinidad SR (same as applied last time). I was wondering how often folks are having their boats hauled and painted? I guess I am generally wondering if I have gotten myself into more than I am willing to handle as far as maintenance. Any words of experience along these lines would be helpful. thanks in advance for any input! Don s/v No Whining (Catalina 30 #5543)
