Prettiest Boat at the Show....

Well, I looked at a lot of boats at the Annapolis Boat Show -- always a fun thing to do. I always leave my check book at home when I do this dangerous deed. And my choice for the prettiest boat at the show? The Friendship 40. This boat looks like a Stradivarius afloat. Take a peek and eat your heart out. It could be in your slip next year as the base price for this boat, basically a two-person day sailor if you can imagine that, is only $785,000.... FYI, I'm going out for a sail my H28.5 Monday on a boat I own outright and just love. But I can dream, can't I?

The BEST boat for you is always

the one you currently own, with this caveat recently suggested by The Admiral: "...and one you can stand UP in!" Sweet, but where are the lifelines. I am terrified that many of our rich senior citizens are going to be buying these things and falling overboard. :)

life lines

For 785K... you expect life lines and a life-sling? That's the problem with society today (democrates)... always expecting something for nothing.

Don't need 'em

I was on the Friendship at the Newport show, and you never need to leave the cockpit. Everything is controlled hydraulically from the cockpit, including raising and furling the main. So.... no lifelines to spoil the look.

For 785K

I expect a chase boat to pick up overboards. ;D

No lifelines, I guess no anchor either.

Apparently for $785K their headsail furlers are guaranteed not to jam. This is pushing daysaling to an extreme. Can't even anchor for lunch.

You mean my taxes don't include

lifelines? I'll pick up the anchor myself. :)

lifelines!

....personally, i consider lifelines over rated. except in bad weather. i trip over them more often than not. 700K+!!! and you don't get maid service! *grr

I may purchase two of them...

...after all...one may be dirty and I have to use the spare some day!

Agreed...

but the rep told us the price of this one was $1.1M and the F53 over $2M. Warren it was nice metting you. Philippe

Lifelines.

I would not need lifelines if I never set an anchor in a blow, or never had a furling line jam, or never had a jib sheet snag on a hatch or dorade, or never had guests that like to sunbath on the foredeck. Don't need a stern rail either. Who needs a place to store the dink outboard or grill? They are pretty boats, but I still like a cruising boat with standing headroom below.

FYI....

The Friendship 40 does have standing headroom in the main salon -- which was not much bigger, and may even be smaller, in volume than the cabin of my H28.5.... I was astounded to find that all the control lines are electronically operated and managed. Being the minimalist that I am, I always think about what happens when the inevitable corrosion sets in and these systems begin to malfunction. I suppose you then just throw away this boat and buy another....

I enjoyed talking to you Warren

Warren, I enjoyed talking to you at the Good Old Boat booth on Friday. Sorry that I didn’t get a chance to meet some of the other posters. I understand they came in small bunches all afternoon. Well there is always next year. All the best, Robert Gainer

"Rich Seniors"

I wouldn't worry about the rich seniors buying them and falling overboard. Thier heirs probably wont know what it's worth and you can pick it up for a steal at the estate sale =)

They are gorgeous.

There is one kept at Little Sabine in Pensacola. The deck is beautiful. Looks like some high in parquet flooring. The owner said he acutally went to New Zealand for six weeks of sea trails during the final customization. The deck has places for stantions and life lines but they really do detract from the looks. BTW owner claimed $1.1 after freight to US. Day Sailor with a capital "S".

Warren, nice to see you at the show

I was expecting a guy with a beard, as you've appeared in "Good Old Boat" and "Spinsheet" magazines. What happened to it? Nice to put some faces with names. I looked at the Friendship 40 too and you certainly are right about its beauty. But I'd be afraid of dock dings and birds crapping on it if it were mine. Guess my good old boat is good enough...
