Pressure-wash interior walls of a Cal 20?

Hi, We just bought a '67 Cal 20, and like many sailboats the paint is peeling from the inside walls. Is it safe to pressure-wash the interior walls to remove the paint, or is that a bad idea given that the underlying laminate is somewhat porous? Thanks!

Pressure wash cal 20

I have a great little cal 20 that's fortunely is already painted, varnished an wired with great little bulkhead lamps. I don't know if yours is the same, but I would not advise pressure washing inside. remove the paint with a scraper, and a vacuum handy. If there's patches left on that won't come off just sand them down, give it a couple of coats of primer (sand with very smooth sand paper (150 maybe) inbetween primer coats, and roll on easy epoxy. I just acquired a cal 34 and paid some experienced painters to do the enterior that was peeling off, and that's the procedure they used. Or you could buy mine.

Thanks for reply

Thanks for the reply-- I've come to the same conclusion as you that scraping is the way to go. One fun thing: we're thinking of covering our sliding hatch with some thin teak. It's showing some cracks at the front, and the teak will be one way of reinforcing and giving the hatch a "shippy" looke.

Wallcovering?

Jim: Have you considered using some type of vinyl paper instead of paint? I've also mrecently bought a Cal 20 and, once I've gotten past the urgent stuff (delamination!, keel bolts), plan to fix up the cabin. I've noticed that the interior walls are pretty crummy, far from smooth, and am thinking that something on top of them might look much nicer. Dick

Bead-Board

We haven't considered wallpaper options, but I think that we've seen enough headliner problems to be concerned that whatever we pasted in would let loose in the future. The glue residue left after the paper lets go could be ugly to deal with. On two Cal 20s I've seen for sale, the owners went to the trouble of installing bead-board paneling up and down the walls. This would add weight and probably wouldn't be the best for a racing Cal 20, but for a crusier it looked awfully nice.
