I have just had my transmission rebuilt, however it has not been installed yet... and am planning to take a look at everything from the transmission back. My coupler is a little worn... so will change that out and take a look at the cutless bearing, and engine alignment.

How does one know if the pressure plate needs to be replaced (I think it is original)? Boat is 27 years old with a Yanmar 2GF. All springs are in place. Is it worth replacing while all torn apart?

As long as you have everything torn apart, its a good idea to replace it. What you are referring to is the Damper Plate. They dont usually last as long as the trans and are inexpensive.

I replaced mine on a 4.108 bolted to a velvet drive and documented it for an article to be published in Good Old Boat-May, 2011. The plate I needed cost approx $65. They bolt to the flywheel with capscrews. I suggest that before you attempt to remove the screws, soak them overnight with penetrating fluid. If you break one off they could be a bugger to drill out. You are only too aware of the amount of work required to pull and re-install the transmission. For the cost to replace the disc and cover plate it would be a shame to redo the job in a couple of years to replace them then.
It will be time to head her out to the water real soon. Enjoy your newly repaired boat.

Was it a Yanmar made damper plate? Many of them are made by Sachs and can be had for about 1/4 the price of a marine dealer. I found my Sachs damper plate for about $80.00..

You can definitely do better than Gowen Rich. They are the absolute last place I would buy parts in Portland.

Like MS said, try finding it through a Sachs dealer.
