Preparing tiller for summer

This will be my second season with my '84 C22. Last year I just wanted to get her on the water, but this year I want to oil/varnish/whatever my tiller. Any suggestions on what to use? Do I sand it down first (if so, what grit?). Any special handling? Thanks, everyone.

Varnish and Cover

John: I find that a little sanding (ending with 200 or finer) and several coats of a good marine varnish is fine, especially if you cover the tiller with a canvas cover or even an old towel when not in use but exposed to sun. Revarnish about once every 2 or 3 years or whenever it looks like it needs it. Dick
