Preparing the 30 for transport

We (professional) will be transporting a 30 footer from the coast inland and I plan on doing the decommissioning myself to save a few $$$. Can anyone advise on excactly what would be necessary relative to disconnects/shutdowns, system security, proper security of shrouds, stays and spreaders, stabilization, etc, etc. The transport route is flat interstate and should not exceed 5-6 hours. I plan on setting the mast on the deck (boards on bow and stern pulpits, plenty of carpet and line to tie down. Any help is greatly appreciated.ThanksBob

Bob, you should make a couple of wooden crutches to support the mast weight and use the pulpits for tie down and light support. This will prevent any excess srain on the pulpit bases. Good luck.

Gerry.Thanks. How much does do the masts weigh? A crutch is a great idea, its just figuring out the dimensions, best but cheapest material to use and where to locate them.Bob

Use the pros

I had to transport my C30 twice within two years, due to company relocation. Both times I used a transport service (so satisfied I used the same guy twice). Make sure you pick one who is experienced hauling sailboats. Mine had mast crutches along the side...no sense placing extra strain on the topsides of the boat. I used hot water pipe insulation to group the stays and halyards. The furler and covered lines were then bungied and secured to the mast to prevent chafe while in transport. I removed the deck and mast light bulbs on the mast and secured the mast light with electrical tape. (I took the opportunity to replace all bulbs). I also removed the wind/speed/depth gauges to avoid any damage from vibration (not sure this is necessary). I used carpeting in the anchor well to keep the anchors from bouncing around. The tanks were filled to avoid shloshing. Both times the boat was delivered without incident. And very satisfied with the result.
