Recently bought a 34' Hunter (1983), and want to install a Auto-Pilot. Any one have experience .. good or bad with this. I had a Hunter 27 with a Raytheon 4000 and it performed OK.

Ray 4000

I installed a RayMarine ST4000 and it works great. Plus it has more display features than the older ST4000. The only drawback is that it can't handle high rudder loads...so I always need to reef early.

Simrad WP30. . .

rules when it comes to price/performance. See the LINK below. Also try using your own search arguments in "Forum Archives". There is an amazing amount of info to be found.

Simrad/Navico WP.

I really like my Simrad WP (formerly Navico WP300CX). Easy to install and use. Biggest advantage is ease of installtion (no compass to install below deck). Good price now even includes low end remote. More powerful than Autohelm for a heavier boat. Interfaces for Simrad/Navico or NEMA183. 1. Mount the unit on the wheel. 2. Run the cable down the pedestal. 3. Hook the power to your instrument circut breakers. 4. Turn it on. Takes longer to figure out the instructions than to actually do the work. About 2-3 hours including electrical hookup.

Raytheon 5000 was my choice

I installed a Raytheon 5000 unit on my dash but I installed a Winlock drive in the pedistall because it has more power. The motor is large enough to hold the ship on course in heavy weather. The 5000 is hocked up to the rest of the instruments (wind direction and speed, depth, radar, boat speed and GPS). If I want, I can sail the wind direction or the GPS waypoints. Winlock is sold by PYI who sells Max Props.

Capabilities!!!

I had a Ratheon 4000 on my 1980 H30 and it worked fine after I sent it back twice. I know have a Simrad WP10 on a H31. I choose the following for the awitch: 1....You don't have to cut a hole in the bulkhead for the control pad. 2....Ease of installation 3....You have the control pad right at the wheel, not at arms length like the 4000. [main reason] 4....Less money. I dont need the capabilities of the 4000. I just saw the WP 10 advertised at $695. If you don't need the capability of the 4000 or the WP 30 you can get the WP 10 and save a couple bills. One thing you do need is a large wheel. The wheel on my H 30 would have been to small.
