Ron,

I recently had a pre-purchase survey performed on 1987 Beneteau First 305 that I am considering.

The surveyor recommened that the following:

1. There is a slight crack between the hull and keel. Pull the keel bolts and look for wasting. Reinstall and tighten to manufactures specification and seal seam as needed.

2. One of the winches sounded dry and needed service.

Can you give me any pointers on how best to proceed with the above.

Thanks

Go online to the winch company. You can probably download a manual that includes rebuilding proceedures.

The keel could be dropped just slighty for inspections- maybe without undoing the bolts? Seems like even my smallish B235 had that same crack. Drop, clean, seal with 5200. At the very least, keep recaulking at every haulout. There is a thread on the ask all sailors forum about those "smile" cracks.
