Pre-Launch Shopping List and some questions (7 images)

I just finished my pre-launch inventory on my new (to me) 89 Catalina 30 Mk II and besides the stuff my surveyor recommended, I have a shopping list and was wondering what you folks thought. Also had some pictures to show and ask questions about.

Needed before launch:
1 x Group 27 (M)
2 x Group 24 (DC)
Prop shaft zinc
Thru-hull (1", I think, see picture, I believe it is for the bilge pump)

Needed this season:
Backup tiller handle (none on the boat)
Coaming box, lower teak piece for port side, and recommendations on adhesive to secure it (and how to remove the old adhesive)
Dinghy pump

I know that's kind of a big list, but I wanted ideas on the best places to shop for some of these items. Batteries, zinc, and thru-hull are the big ones, where's the best deal? There's a WM at Herrington Harbour where I am keeping her, but I don't mind driving around a little if there's a good deal to be had elsewhere near Annapolis, Deale, DC, or Northern VA. Is it better to just buy batteries at WM because warranty service will be easier since they're at my marina, or should I hunt down the best deal nearby?

Pictures and questions:

Is this a 1" thru-hull? The surveyor recommends replacing it this season because it has some small cracks. I believe it's the bilge pump outlet.


Here's the lazarette, the bottom looks pretty beat up, it's showing some of the matting/roving? How can I clean this up?


Is this a pedestal cover?



What on earth is this? It came in a little bag and excepting that it doesn't offer a very good moment arm, looks like the lug wrench from a spare tire kit.



Is this depression in the lazarette meant to hold a small trash bin?

It sure looks like a spark plug wrench set. As for the batteries, I would try Sam's Club or Walmart for much better pricing than WM.

While WM gets a lot of bad press in regard to their prices, keep an eye out for their spring sales. I recently bought a Group 24 battery from them for $50. Comparable batteries at Sears and Walmart were around $70-80. Also, WM will price-match most other reputable sellers. Just before my spring launch, I bought two shaft anodes from them for $12 when I showed them a print-out from an online source (e.g. http://www.boatzincs.com/shaft1-sizes.html). I think you'll find it very convenient to have a West on the reservation at Herrington, particularly when you need something in a hurry. Good luck with the new boat.

No offense, but that is a small list. As mentioned, I would buy the batteries at a discount place like Walmart, Costco, etc. I would buy the tiller and coaming trim from Catalina Direct, or some other Catalina specific place, and the rest of the stuff from West Marine (WM).

For your pictures, to clean up the lazarette I would apply some new gelcoat. WM sells a nice kit to do repairs like that, it allows you to match the color. The small tools are definitely a spark plug socket - did the boat come with a dingy or outboard motor for a dingy? That's what the kit is for. Sorry but I can't answer your other questions.

What you think is the pedestal cover appears to be the canvass cover for a cruisaire unit. New they cost around $150. There should be four plastic rods that fit into the bottom slots. They may be missing. Do you have a cruiseaire unit? If not I would suggest putting this up for sale. I wish I could have found one for my boat when I needed it.

Yes the white canvas sure looks like the cover used to install a carry on A/C unit. Some people use these covers to install small window A/C units on a hatch in the cabin top so don't throw it away. The tool kit is probably the kit that came with a small outboard dingui engine. For the through the hull go to West marine as they are not very expensive and it is best to get a marine quality one. Also get stainless steel clamps. For batteries you can do Walmart or Costco as they move their inventory and you have a good chance of getting fresh batteries plus you will have countless outlets around the country to handle warranty replacements if need be. I don't understand why you would go for 2 group 24s unless you have space restrictions. I would go for 3 group 27s and would get them all deep discharge even if I was using one as a starting battery. THis would allow intercheangebility and a few added extra amps in capacity. Don't know about the deppression in the lazarette but you can use it as you see fit.

Thanks for the answers, everyone! I've got some follow-ups.

Point taken on the battery shopping, I will go to Sears, they appear to have decent pricing and are nearby. Benny, you suggest using 3 group 27s, but 27s are 2" wider than 24s, so I'd need 4" additional inches in my battery bay. As you can see in the picture below, it would be a tight fit, and I'd have to take out the plastic spill buckets.

Is getting rid of the spill buckets and the lids advisable, or should I stick with the 24s?

The boat did come with an Achilles dinghy and 4HP Mercury, so you are probably right about it being a spark plug wrench kit, thanks for the heads-up. It looked like sockets for something, but I had no idea what it could be.

There is also a portable A/C unit, so you're probably right again about it being for that and not a pedestal cover.

We will pick up the WM gelcoat kit for the lazarette repair and learn how to use it. The admiral is looking forward to it (she's the crafty one) and one of my boat buddies said it's great we get to practice on an area that won't get seen much. (-:

Warren, I'll print out that price list and go to WM to get my zincs. Thanks for the tip. Are you at North or South, and what slip? We'll be on the B dock at South. Our girl is called "Recess", but we'll be changing that eventually.

Barry, we're going to order the emergency tiller from CatalinaDirect, but unfortunately they don't offer the lower portion of the coaming box. I will probably repair the existing pieces in the meantime and then get a new one later. Any recommendations on what kind of adhesive should I use to reattach it?

And for the above-the-waterline thru-hull for the bilge pump, what kind of adhesive should I use?

I also need to get a pump for dinghy inflation, recommendations on ease and price?
