Good Morning Peggie, A while ago I asked you some questions about installing a prefilter in our head intake hose To stop all the alge blooms from smelling up our hbowl rim. I have an extra water pump filter I was going to use that has the same line size. this weekend I installed it. I took the intake hose off the PH11 manual head. re ran the hose back into the head vanity cabinet. Then connected to the filter (Dbl hose clamps). (this is a clear bowl type filter with screw on cup and mesh ss screen.)... Then connected a new hose from the filter to the head....The filter is above waterline..then used a hose bulkhead connector and mounted the filter to the bulkhead high and checked all hoses so none were pinched.....everything looked fine.....I then opened the through hull...(we are in the water).....Checked the filter...looked like no water in the filter just air......so I switched the head to "flush" mode...pumped....the head sucked raw water into the filter filled the bowl then through the screen...the clear bowl filled up with water and green alge....the screen trapped most of it and the water pumped into the rim and filled the bowl...everything seamed fine....maybe a finer screen would be better though.....anyway..the head continued to pump and you could tell the waste was moving to the holding tank freely......so then I turned the head valve to "Dry"...and tryed to pump...its at that point the lever wont push down...it has a vapor lock or back pressure.....thats my question...WHY??? and why would a prefilter affect the backpressure??? Would very much appreciate your insight. thanks Rob

I don't THINK the two problems are related...

I think the reason you can't pump is, the air valve on the front of the wet/dry valve housing (it's a small flat square nut with with a hole in it that looks likes it's molded into the housing, but actually threads in) is either clogged or has failed. Remove it, clean it, put it back and try to pump the toilet again. If you still can't pump out the bowl, give Vic Willman at Raritan a call...800-352-5630 x 6. If that clears up the problem, remove it again and wrap the threads with teflon tape to prevent it from leaking. Btw...how old is the toilet?

Ill give that a try

The unit is a raritain 11 manual...about 20 years old..Im guessing as the boat is a 1985 and it looks to be original.....we purchased the boat 3 years ago and I have yet to rebuild it. so its probably do.....you are refering to the joker?? just below the pump handle in front...of the pumpa ssembly about half way down??? thanks Rob

No...not the joker valve, the AIR valve

I told you where to look for it--on the front of the wet/dry valve housing (the joker valve is in the toilet discharge fitting). If you're not where you can see it on the toilet, you can find it on the drawing here: http://www.raritaneng.com/pdf_files/ph_II/L04Ephiiv0303.pdf part #1203W. And here's another link that's very handy to trouble-shoot the PH II: http://www.raritaneng.com/information/faq_topics/faq_ph_II.html#a6 And yes, I'd say it's definitely overdue for rebuilding...it should be rebuilt about every 5-6 years. If your toilet was mfr'd before 6/92, you need rebuild kit PHRKII...if after 6/92, you need kit PHRKIIC.

Your right again. Thanks Peggie

I removed the square nut in front of the pump as you recomended...It looked fine but as I pushed the spring down either lint or fuzz was inside the spring caiusing it not to work...I cleaned it out reinstalled...now the head pumps on flush and dry without backpressure!...Thanks Peggie...unfortunatly when I retightened it this bull in the china shop broke the plastic nut with the wrench...so im ordering a new on anyway...the old on is still installed and not leaking and still working just the plastic nut cracked off.....aaaaaahhh...boat ownership!
