My latest issue of Practical Sailor has a review/comparison of the Big 3 and their 32' boats. Interesting reading. They give the overall nod to Catalina by a slight margin mainly because its more a "conventional" type sailboat. They gave high marks to Hunter for interior, but they didn't like the arch, too radical for them I guess. They said the typical Catalina owner uses his boat more and works on it himself, whereas the Hunter owner spends more time at the dock and gets his credit card out for repairs. I didn't like that comment!

I agree Bob...

In fact there were a couple of comments in the article that seemed to fall into the "Hunter bashing" catagory. Maybe I'm just thin skinned about it but it I wonder if they didn't start with a bias against Hunters. It's a pretty good magazine in general, maybe they should stick to reviewing products instead of boats. I wonder if Practical Sailor knows how many Hunter owners read P.S. for information on repairs and upgrades that they will do themselves? At least we have Hunterowners.com for that information!

I agree and if I am wrong tell me... aren't most of the posts on the HOW about people making repairs themselves? Maybe Practical sailor needs to visit this site before commenting or at least take a pole.

The PS crew sometimes remind me of the times

in the mid 60's to the mid 70's where many individuals and groups were looking for a cause, action or orginization to vilify. Many times justly, and as many times ignorantly. There are many factors that aid the last action. Most are cured by maturity. Ray S/V Speedy

Practical Sailor Sucks!

Sorry, but I ended my subscription years ago because of the "objective" commentary that was usually...wrong!!! The Catalina is a decent boat, BUT, for pure sailing, out of the three, I would give Hunter and Beneteau a tie for first place, and, Catalina a second. I wonder if Practical Sailor checked out the "really cool" PLASTIC through hulls on the Catalina's.

but Tim, some.............

Tim: You know that some think that marelon is the "Cats" ass. I have to agree with you. When you grab ahold of one of these fittings it feels like they are going to snap off in your hand. Give me a good bronze ball valve or seacock. I would rather worry about the corrosion than worrying about the damn thing breaking off before my eyes!

PS

I agree with the post responses about Practical Sailer. They seem to be far more subjective rather than objective. However the comments on Marelon are also subjective. Marelon is much stronger than bronze, just take a hammer to both and see which breaks first. Marelon is not subject to electrolytic corrosion. During a lightning strike see which thru hull blows out first. Marelon did have a problem with their handles not being strong. I brought that up to the manufacturer at The International Boatbuilders Exposition last month. They showed me their new handle which meets the strength of their valves and thru hulls. Marlon and "plastic" are two different things.
