Please, Two friends and I are adding a power source ( motor ) to our main winches ( Lewmar 44's). Has anyone done this? How did you make space for; and where did you place the motor? How did you power it ? Where did you run the power wires to? Many Thanx, " In Over My Head , and Going Down for the Third Time !!! aka: MRF

Electric Winch

Dear Mr. Murphy: I haven't done this yet myself, but the directions say that you have to attach the motor directly to the bottom of the winch. The wires need to be connected to a power source. Hope this helps! Signed...the 3rd Musketeer

As Mulf says, if you buy the Lewmar power-kit, you will have very little chose how this goes together.

Our L44 halyard winch is powered. The motor sits DIRECTLY attached to the bottom of the winch. It is about the size of a 16oz soda bottle, and is oriented 90 degrees to the axis of the winch. (see pix)This cannot change, but you can rotate it in any direction to make fitting easier. The hull liner had to be cut for ours to be fit, and the installer made a small teak box that covers it in the aft stbd cabin.

Wiring of the winch and relay is pretty much by the instruction manual. Follow the wiring sizing guide to the letter. The switch can go anywhere, but best close to the winch.

Jackdaw, Thanx for the timely response. The positioning I understand. It's the power source and wiring to it with which I and Mulf and our 2nd Muskateer need help. There does not seem to be room in the headliner to run a thick elect. cable to our battery bank on opposite side of boat and to the middle. We thought of putting a new, winch-dedicated battery into an adjacent cabinet. ( ??) Anyone out there that has made this conversion?? Many Thanx, MRF

See Mine.

John,
I am in Rock Hall and did this job about six years ago. You'll be happy that you did it. Stop over and check it out. We are "Stolen Moments" at Gratitude Marina. I'd be happy to show you the install. I'll be at the boat this weekend. I also will be passing through Kent on 5/8 on my way to St .Mike and back on 5/10. You might be able to meet me there.

To Dave Sharp

Dave: John Murphy's computer is giving him trouble this morning. We would like to take you up on your offer to visit this weekend. How does 10am on Saturday fit with your plans? Please reply by email to mulf at live dot com. I have winter stored Dreamboat in Haven Harbour for the last 10 years so I know where Gratitude is. If you provide a phone number in your email we can ring you if needed. I will reply with mine. Thanks!
