Hello, a 91 H30 I'm in the process of buying won't do more than 2300 rpm without the fresh water cooling circuit overheating. The surveyor measured 106 deg as exhaust outlet, 175 at injectors 189 at thermostat at 2300 rpm rising to 200 deg at 2500 rpm. Transmission was 136 deg. The seller has agreed to get a Yanmar agent to fix it and write his satisfaction up (so I can insure it!) so... Qu1 - The boat is in the water at a dock - what's a fair test of full-power with no overheating? Can we simply run it at "x" rpm whilst tethered to the dock pilings or is that not a very good test? (I'm imagining that the prop would "unload" at hull speed). Qu2 - what do other 88-94 H30 owners get as max speed under power (freshly painted bottom). Thanks in advance (this is a VERY useful forum btw) Patrick in Port Charlotte

could be

It could be many different things causeing the problem let a yanmar check it out since seller is a greeing to do so. I have 290 2001 2gm fresh water cooled and she runs 3400 rpm's with no problem but your problem could be many different things. Hows port charlotte for sailing my 290 with 3'6" draft I am looking to retire there in a few years and will be visiting in january. NICK

Sounds like a mixing elbow to me.

Patrick: It sounds like the mixing elbow to me. This is a 1-2 hr. job plus the parts. They should also replace the raw water impeller too. You should be able to put it in gear and run it at 3200-3400 at the dock for 20 min. without an overheating problem. Once they pull the elbow, they should know right away. There are also other considerations for boat speed. Condition of the bottom, the prop, current etc. Be sure that you check you boat speed with a GPS. Best way to get some real averages over a 2-3 course up & back. I would think you are going to be able to do 6 - 6.5 kts over the course if everything is A-OKAY.

I run mine at the dock

I run my engine weekly at the dock, if i can't get it out on the bay, for a half hour in gear at about 3000 RPM. It is actually good to run your engine weekly but it needs to be loaded and run at a respectable RPM to do any good. So go ahead and run it at the dock.

We had a 2GM with a two blade on our 1989 H28...

It would cruise all day at 3,000 RPM and would go to 3,600 RPM for short periods without ever over heating. Yanmar told me to check the RPM by warming the engine, then in neutral go to max throttle, which should be around 4,200 RPM. He said it will not hurt the engine. Do the same in forward gear, as a way to check the RPM guage. Do the same in reverse and see what happens. Terry

RPM

I have the same boat and motor as you, 1990 version. I run all day at 2,800 - 2,900 with no over heating and average 5 - 6 knots dependant on sea and current conditions. Can run up to 3,500 with no over heating.

easy check

my raw water intake pump inpeller is very easy to check, comes loose with only two bolts and than the back plate cover comes off with about five screws and has a oring gasket which makes checking the impeller very easy and eliminates a bad impeller that would cause overheating. If that checks out okay than check out the thermostat also check for a clogged mixing elbo

2GM20F heat exch - clean in situ?

Well so far the team are spot on (well done chaps!) - the Yanmar guy thought the impellor needed changing but wasn't bad enough to cause problem. Next on his list was the mixing elbow - examinaion of this resulted in much sucking of teeth and ordering up of a new one. If this still doesn't do the trick on Monday, how do we clean out the heat exchanger - can it be done in situ or does it have to come off? Thanks as always Patrick in Port Charlotte
