12 volt power

This is the battery selecter switch and has nothing to do with shore (dock - 110volt) power. In a multiple battery system it selects which battery is connected for use - battery 1, battery 2, or both or none (off). This is the way your boat was wired at the factory. if there was only one battery it functioned as a simple on/off switch to disconnect the battery from the engine and house circuits. However, you should check carefully to be sure that it is still wired that way. the way battery banks are wired is somnething many owners personalize particularly if there are multiple banks with combiners or equalizers etc. if you aren't sure what you are looking at, get someone at your dock to take a look with you and show you how it works. The shore power (110 volt) is another story altogether. Figure out what is what and how it all works before you plug it in. 110 volts can be very dangerous on boats if not wired and operated correctly. Good Sailing Bill Murray S/V Good Faith H29.5 #175

BE CAREFUL!

Gil: Bill had good info for you but one thing he (sort of) left out is that whatever else you do, never, NEVER turn the battery selection switch to the "OFF" position with the engine running! You will likely fry all sorts of expensive equipment like your voltage regulator, alternator, etc. If you do a search through the archives you will find some interesting discussions on the subject! I suspect you are fairly new to sailing (welcome aboard, you are going to love it!) and highly recommend you go to your library and pick up any one of the numerous books on the subject of boat electrical systems. Even better, go to your local West Marine/Boat US store and brouse through their selections. Good luck! Tim Leighton (S/V "Magic" C-400)
