cal cal 2-29 San Diego
I was just wondering what other power plants other cal 229 owners have put in. I have the Farreyman A20, and it has a boat load of hours and will need to be rebuilt and or replaced in the near future. Happy Sailing. San Diego Bay and the local waters are great sailing waters.

Beta

The engine of choice for a Cal 2-29 on the Cal owners email lists is the Beta. In a conversation with the rep at the Annapolis Boat Show, he recommended the 12hp over the 20hp because the 20 was powerful enough to cause the Cal 29 stern to squat and suck in water thru the cockpit drain at optimal RPM. Nevertheless many owners have installed the 20hp; if you already have a 20hp, you will have your own opinion on this. Twelve to fifteen hp seems to be optimal (some original engines went as high as 30hp which is indeed excessive).

229 power plant

Jonesy I have a great mechanic to recommend to you when you rebuild or replace your engine. He just rebuilt and installed mine in my Cal34. He's the fellow that did all the work for Johhny Carson on both his sailboat and the 130' Serengetti which they just sold down there in San Diego. He has 30 or more diesels of different makes and sizes and A4's that he's rebuilt. He installs them, does coversions and gives a guarantee. He's excellent, and very reasonable.

I have the Farymann A30 in my '74 2-29. It is a very well designed and built engine. It was designed to be rebuilt several times. All of the parts are still available from many sources. It makes 10 hp at 2,500 rpm and that is under load for a 100% duty cycle. (continuous operation at 68 degrees). This engine with the 2:1 transmission and the standard 12" prop at 6" pitch will move the boat at 5 kts. 4.5 with wind and waves, and that's good enough fo me. To move her at hull speed, 6.7 kts, you would need 10 more hp, 20 hp. That's twice the engine for 1.7 kts. This is a solid engine. I would keep it and rebuild it, but, good luck with whatever you decide. The link below is the place where I get all my parts.

3 cyl Izuzu in a cal 2-29

I repaired the original 2 cly volvo motor all the way down the coast from Vancouver to Huatulco Mexico where it finally went out with a bang that left no dought that it was time for a new motor. I replaced it with an Izuzu 3 cylinder that wieghts less than the Volvo and produces 24 hp compaired to 10 or less and what a great thing it is to have all that HP. I have had no problems with the exhaust going under the waterline because of the increased HP

Thanks for the help Jeff. I think you have the right idea, give the old girl a rebuild, she is a great power plant. Thanks again, Jonsey
