ONE RACE OF A DISTANCE OF 55NM (ROUND TRIP)

The QYC highlight of the 2009 sailing season is our signature race from Quantico to the “A” buoy off of Colonial Beach, VA and back. This will be an excellent opportunity to hone your skills and prove your endurance. All boats will round the A buoy to port…that means as you go around the buoy the buoy stays on your left side (port side) of your boat.

Bragging rights are naturally in play. All racers and cruisers are invited to participate with a minimum crew of 2 for safety. All instructions will be given by vhf radio. As required the committee boat can be contacted via DSC on VHF at MMSI #338084529 or by hailing on Channel 16. The start time will be 1100, be GPS based and also announced on the VHF.

Those were the days when they had the Potomac Racing Fleet and we raced every Saturday from Dahlgren to Fairfax.

Oh, Saturday 19-20 is the same weekend Dahlgren is doing their big race from Dahlgren to Canoe Neck Creek. There is also a bunch of cruisers heading down to Canoe Neck creek and we will raft up there. I am hoping to see 20 boats in the raft up.

Mathias Point can be a bear

In one race about 8 years ago we had a boat try to cut behind the spider and run down the river on the Virginia shore there. The ran aground about 1/2 down to the bridge. We were all sitting there basically under the bridge becalmed and stopped laughing when they caught up to us and were becalmed with us. It always turns into about 1/2 dozen mini races as we go up and down the river and conditions change.

I am doing the Leukemia Cup with the Daingerfield Island Sailing Club crew the weekend before if you are looking for entertainment. I am taking my boat up Firday night and returning saturday night after all the racing and dinner.
