Just splashed the boat today (326 with Yanmay 2GM20F). Thought I would take it out for a quick spin to warm up engine. Motoring down Detroit river this weekend to new marina. Aftern 30 minutes saw quite a bit of smoke coming out of back and alarms went off. Was at mouth of marina so I just turned around and docked at closest slip. Went below and saw I completely forgot to open water intake. Once I did this engine worked great. Should I be worried about damage to engine. I am going to replace impeller tomorrow, but should I check something else.

Yanmars will take a LOT of abuse. Long as you shut it down fairly quickly after temp alarm went off and it started up and ran well later, it should be fine. Did it once with my 3GM30F.

I would not worry about it! Replacing the impeller is a good measure. The alarms are set well below the level where damage should occur.

While it is great to have gauges I think the alarms are your first defense.

The 'F' in your engine type No. 2GM20F indicates that it is fresh water cooled.
This means the alarm that went off would have been because the fresh water cooling circuit was unable to dissipate the heat generated by the engine. That is after heating up the 6 gallon hot water tank first. A raw water cooled engine would have been in deep trouble by then.

Thus the engine temperature would only have been marginally high and actual damage to the engine most unlikely; unless you persisted in running it for a longish period with the alarm sounding.
However, the condition of your raw water pump impeller is open to doubt and at least having a look at it would seem to be a good idea.
So your intention to change it is right (and keep the original as a spare if it looks undamaged).

impeller

Those pumps are self priming so no need to prime usually. Remember, you will need to find all those missing blades that have no doubt come off the impeller.

Where would blades be?

When you pull the rubber impeller, if you have lost one or more blades, the blades will be in the inlet side of the heat exchanger.. carefully pull the sea water inlet hose at the forward end cap on the exchanger.. get a little flashlight and look through the nipple .. You should be able to see the tubes and NO rubber impeller parts.. If you see pieces, you can try to fish them out of the small hole or just pull the end cap and remove them..

Thanks for input. Pulled impeller and it was in perfect shape. Bought new one just to be on safe side.
