posts and dinghies

The question about supporting the beam below the mast ... any
vertical post must not stop at the "floor" of the cabin but go down
to the hull and also have lateral support from the bulkhead or
whatever to spread the load so that it will not push a bulge in the
hull. Anyone who has installed such vertical support emphasizes
these things. (We simply strengthened the beam on forward side
without changing vertical support and it seems to have worked okay,
just don't super-tighten the rigging.)

Brian I wish you good luck in finding a used Tinker, they are not
common. I would be delighted to sell our Traveller but would not
sell it to you as a colleague and potential friend, because ... it
has travelled over 6,000 nautical miles with us, it is now about 30%
caulk and glue and sealer, I closed off the daggerboard slot because
water slopped up when motoring and wetted the captain's behind.
Also, gave away the sailing rig in 1993, possibly the dealer in
Montreal still has it and would be glad to get rid of it!

Thanks John. I spoke to the dealer, Eric Spencer yesterday. The cost of a
new Tinker Tramp is about $5000 Canadian. He is sending me details but...The
reason I am so intrigued by the tinker is that I had an opportunity to sail
one, courtesy of Judy Schwan, at the rendezvous last year. Just a great
tender to have on the Vega, or any other vessel. I am sending the word to
everyone who may know of a used one, even my son in California...I've asked
him to scour the used inflatable section...of course now that I have
informed everyone in the Vega community, I suppose the value of a Tinker
just escalated...Hope to see you at the rendezvous this year John.
And...you too Bill, sail on up from Oregon. Bill did a wonderful job of
strengthening the mast support on his Vega. Perhaps a picture could be
uploaded to the site Bill.

Cheers
