It looks like my wife and I may become Hunter 40' owners soon -- we have a survey tomorrow!!! I'm new to this forum and haven't quite figured out how to search very well. I was trying to just search the Hunter forum but get results for everything. Anyway...

We plan on heading south from MD to Bahamas for an ~ 1.5 yr cruise.

There is a long (and growing) list of things we'd like to modify and I'd be interested in what other folks have done with these:

Dingy davits
Converting CNG to LPG -- how to create sealed locker, where?
Anchor - what size do you use, what size chain? I'm thinking of a 35 lbs Mason Supreme with ~100 ft of 5/16" chain

Bimini -- any recommendations for canvas folks in the norther Chesapeake?

Solar/Wind -- what type of installations? Any recommendations? Brands? Sources? etc.?

Thanks!

Alan

I'm assuming you mean the H 40 ('84 - '91). The other is a 40.5 and a completely different boat. My friend owns one of these ('86) and is the original owner. He's been all over with her, New England, Bermuda, Florida Gulf Coast and Caribbean. I've sailed with him and really like the boat. She's very stable and strong and can take some real nasty seas.

You can find info and mods on this model in the Boat Info tab at the top of this page.

The Best way to search the forums is to use the SEARCH tab at the top of the page between Resources and Login in the blue banner section. HTH!

Yup, I'm talking the 80s vintage Hunter.

There are only 4 modifications for that particular boat. Anyone know of a more active forum of Hunter 40 owners?

IMHO there is NO better forum for Hunter sailboats than this one. If you only found 4 mods in your initial search, may I suggest that you start at the earliest thread in the 'Cherubini' forum as well as this forum and go through them, as I did for my 79 H 30 updates and mods, one by one.
I didn't open all of them. I just looked at the title and the "preview" box that you get when you touch the title with the cursor and opened the ones that seemed relevant. Even other models and sizes threads gave me a wealth of info that translated into an improved 32 year old classic.

I found this activity saved me from watching the news every day!

Given the questions you've asked, I don't think you're even close to doing a Bahamas trip at this time. You really need to understand your boat and how the systems operate and educate yourself first on how others have tackled their desired modifications. Good luck. BTW stay with the surveyor the entire time he's/she's on the boat. A good surveyor will point out what's good and what's not. Don't just wait for their report a week from now to ask questions. You'll be surprised what an experiences surveyor can pass on to you.
