possible PSS seal but missing sommething ??

Hello Alll,

While trying to figure out a noise we have at higher RPM's, see the post by Nice N Easy for gear heads, I found a possible issue with our Shaft seal.

Wish I had a picture to post but it looks just like the Picture on Maine Sail's web site of a normal install of a PSS seal ExCEPT ...

Ours has the Bellows type hose and the metal retainer ring but there is NO ring with a hose fitting sticking out. We get no water dripping anytime, but if you just push down on the belows then water will easily flow in.

If I didn't know better, and I don't, I would say that the person that installed the seal left parts off on purpose for some reason OR forgot it then decided to leave it that way. We just bought the boat in January and the records from the owner show that THE main Yanmar engine people in Annapolis did the work of new engine mounts and a new packing gland a few years ago. I have to look at the recipes that are on the boat to double check this. Will be down later this week to see.

Is there another reason it would look like that, like something is missing ?
Or is my lack of knowledge showing ?

The older PSS seals didn't have a water line for the units used with low RPM engines. These units had to be manually burped to let the air out. This style of PSS was discontinued several years ago, but every once in a while I still see them out there. Perhaps it is one of these units.

The older PSS seals didn't have the hose fitting for the vent. The newer models that have it can be vented to air (well above the heeled waterline) if maximum boat speed is less than 12 knots, according to PYI. If you don't have the fitting, or if it's plugged off, you should be OK as long as you "burp" the seal by pulling back the bellows every time your boat is put back in the water after a haul out.

that makes sense and think it must be the older style.

The noise is a separate issue I believe, and exactly the same noise that Nice & Easy described in his post.

I've got one of those PSS seals without the automatic burper - is that a word?
It's been on my C&C26 for about 9 years.
Yes you have to remember to burp it once a year, but I've never had any problems with it.
